Ry Cooder's soundtrack for The Long Riders received a top-notch treatment from Warner Bros. (Japan), who not only did an excellent remastering job, but backed it up with English lyrics to the songs, notes, and a Japanese insert. Cooder was in fine form with this score, using original material, unusual and anachronistic instruments (saz, tamboura, electric guitar), and elements of traditional songs from the Civil War period. As a result, the album can be appreciated as a unique entity, away from the film – and bonded to the film, the music provides grace and power to the onscreen events.

Released in October 1984 ‘Native Sons’ was the debut album by American band the Long Ryders. Musically, the album fuses 1960s style garage rock and folk rock with country rock. Rolling Stone’s David Fricke described ‘Native Sons’ as an album
“where Nashville, ’77 London and the mid-60s Sunset Strip converge in songs of pioneer aspiration and outlaw bonding.”
This new 3CD edition compiled in conjunction with founding member Sid Griffin contains the original album alongside a raft of demos and a live recording from 1985. Described at the time by Melody Maker as a “Modern American Classic” this version brings together all the tracks that defined the start of Alt Country with a new package containing sleeve notes by Anthony DeCurtis and design by Phil Smee.

The Long Ryders kicked off their major label debut, State of Our Union, with one of their most anthemic and most explicitly political songs, "Looking for Lewis and Clark," and that tune set the tone for the rest of the album – State of Our Union found the Long Ryders reaching for a larger audience at the same time that they were using their music to say a great deal more than they had in the past. Musically, plenty of roadwork had tightened the band's interplay to an even finer point than on Native Sons (Sid Griffin and Stephen McCarthy were both in superb voice, and their guitar work meshed perfectly), and Will Birch's production gave the songs a poppier sheen that still allowed the band's roots-conscious sound to shine through. Lyrically, State of Our Union took a long look at Reagan-era America as the gulf between the rich and the poor began to divide the nation, with "You Can't Ride the Boxcars Anymore," "Two Kinds of Love," and "Good Times Tomorrow, Hard Times Today" all exploring issues of economic injustice, and even the less obvious political songs often having a progressive subtext ("WDIA," a tribute to the great Memphis R&B radio station, deals with how the love of music brought together black and white listeners in the 1960s).

Rhino presents a retrospective boxed set with seven CDs that focus on Cooder s work in the Eighties and early Nineties: The Long Riders, Alamo Bay, Paris, Texas, Blue City, Crossroads, Johnny Handsome and Trespass. RY COODER: SOUNDTRACKS will be available on September 29th. A digital version will also be available. The music is presented in a clamshell box that features new artwork by Tornado Design, the group behind the distinctive look found on several of Cooder s recent studio albums, as well as Rhino s 2008 anthology, The UFO Has Landed. After Cooder worked on soundtracks for Watermelon Man and Performance (starring Mick Jagger), he began producing soundtracks on his own. He started in 1980 with The Long Riders. It was the first of many soundtracks that Cooder would record for the film s director, Walter Hill. Many of them are included in this set: Crossroads, Johnny Handsome, Trespass, and Blue City, a film Hill produced.

This CD opens with an outrageous and exceedingly funky "UFO Has Landed in the Ghetto," and which seems so out of place with the other material. Yes, it is a rhythm & blues, bordering at times on funk album, and rap is one direction R&B took, but…. Listen to the groove on "Which Came First," and try to keep your body from bobbing to the strong rhythm laid down by Jim Keltner, Tim Drummond, and the background vocalists. While we are on the subject of vocals, this is one of Ry Cooder's best efforts, and his backup vocalists are key here and deserve special recognition: Bobby King, John Hiatt, Willie Greene, and Herman Johnson for most of the CD. The two gems on this are the phenomenal treatments of both "Blue Suede Shoes" and Bob Dylan's "I Need a Woman." Two songs as different in the original forms as pigs and gerbils are converted to R&B hit status. Both contain some memorable slide guitar work, but isn't that what we expect from this master of the guitar family. The album is very good but those two songs make it a gem.

SUPERB TRIPLE DISC SET OF CLASSIC LIVE RECORDINGS FROM RY COODER As potent a musician as almost any to have emerged across the past half-century, Ry Coode remains the most influential and inspiring roots performer in the world today. Having started off as a member of Captain Beefheart s Magic Band, the collection of albums Ry released through the 1970s and 1980s bore little if no comparison to anything released concurrently, by anyone. This triple CD box set celebrates this hugely creative period in Ry Cooder s career by featuring a range of live recordings made at Cooder shows in the 70s and 80s, all of which were broadcast live on FM radio. Kicking off on DISC ONE with a gig recorded at The Record Plant, in Sausalito, CA, on 7th July 1974, shortly after the release of Paradise And Lunch, Cooder s fourth studio album, DISC TWO features his show recorded in Hamburg in January 1977, plus tracks he recorded for a BBC in-concert special a few days later. The set concludes on DISC THREE with a marvelous event, this time recorded at The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA, on 25th March 1987.
