Hot Chocolate's "A's, B's & Rarities" makes a chronological run through the group's singles between 1969 and 1975. Along the way the band released some classic songs like "Brother Louie," "You Sexy Thing," and "Emma," and racked up a considerable amount of U.K. chart hits (less so in the U.S.). Their simple but powerful blend of rock, soul, bubblegummy pop, and proto-disco still sounds revolutionary 30 years later (much as the work of another racially mixed group, the Equals, does) and there are a raft of great songs here, like the rocked-out "Go Go Girl," the low-down and funky "Makin' Music," and the sticky-sweet confections "You Could Have Been a Lady" and "Pretty Girls."

Five Men in a Hut is basically the final roundup for Gomez's Hut/Virgin years, but it's a positive boon for fans, especially in the U.S. In the U.K., each Gomez album had at least a few associated singles, but they never got the same treatment stateside. Since each album had a certain specific "sound" to it, one can see how some of these songs wouldn't have fit with the album they were recorded with, but the B-sides were hardly throwaways. In fact, the B-sides were often excellent and allowed the band to try different things and stretch out a bit. Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline gathered a few of these tracks, but more than half of Five Men in a Hut is comprised of B-sides (and two previously unreleased tunes) so ultimately all the A's and B's of many of these singles are now readily available.

Jonian Ilias Kadesha has worked with leading artists and orchestras such as Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Nicolas Altstaedt, Steven Isserlis and Patricia Kopatchinskaja to name but a few. For his debut album on Linn, he has recorded a high-flying recital of solo violin pieces spanning five centuries. One of the oldest pieces of music written for solo violin, Biber’s angelic and absolutely mesmerizing Passacaglia stands alongside Bach’s enduringly famous Second Partita, whose last movement is the starting point for the Ciaccona for Violin Solo by Swiss composer Helena Winkelman, which receives its first commercial recording here. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century works by Schnittke, Kurtág and Lera Auerbach, all heavily inspired by Bach’s music, complete the programme which augurs a fruitful partnership with a promising young talent.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a brand new 2CD deluxe anthology of the complete recordings by the legendary C.C.S. Formed in 1970, C.C.S. (Collective Consciousness Society) was the brainchild of musician and arranger John Cameron, guitarist Alexis Korner (the father of British Blues) and producer MIckie Most. The group was initially conceived as a recording band only, but following the success of their legendary cover version of Led Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta Love” (used as the theme for "Top of the Pops” for many years) and "Tap Turns on the Water”, the band also undertook live work. C.C.S. featured the cream of jazz and blues talent such as flautist Harold McNair, bass players Herbie Flowers and Spike Heatley, sax players Tony Coe and Ron Ross, trumpet players Henry Lowther, Kenny Wheeler and Harold Beckett and drummers Barry Morgan and Tony Carr. Between 1970 and 1973 C.C.S. released three albums and seven singles for RAK Records, with one album and four singles all reaching the UK Top Forty.

Two things distinguished Thomas Hengelbrock's 1996 recording of Bach's B minor Mass from the many other historically informed performances of the work released in the early digital era. Where many other conductors used small mixed choirs, Hengelbrock not only used the 26-voice Bathasar-Neumann-Chor, he drew his soloists from it. And where most other conductors tended exclusively toward quick tempos, Hengelbrock mixed things up, favoring fast tempos in joyful movements and slow tempos for painful movements.
