Good crossover album from Fania All-Stars featuring the track "Picadillo" - tough, tough Nu Yorican latin-jazz-funk-soul tune!

Latin-Soul-Rock by the Fania All-Stars is a half-live, half-studio album. In addition to featuring a few of the actual Yankee Stadium recordings, such as the now-infamous Larry Harlow/Heny Alvarez–penned “Congo Bongo,” the record demonstrated how well the Fania All-Stars could play with others in the studio, namely Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, and Jorge Santana; and at the same time, flex their Latin rock and funk muscles on tunes like the Marty Sheller–arranged “There You Go” and “Viva Tirado,” recently made a hit by El Chicano; and then there was the Bobby Valentín–arranged “Smoke,” which wouldn’t have been out of place spinning on one of Kool Herc’s turntables a few miles down the road from the “House that Ruth Built.” It was fusion, it was funk, it was salsa.

"This is not straight-up salsa, or any of the Latin music varieties one typically associates with Fania. This is salsa-flavored disco. The Fania touches elevate the material above standard-fare 70's club tracks, but the Washington Heights fire is no where to be found. Still, any of these tracks would add a little spice to a vintage disco set."

The flagship act for Fania Records, the Fania All-Stars popularized New York salsa during the 1970s by organizing concerts at larger and larger venues (from the Red Garter in Greenwich Village all the way to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx) that spotlighted not only the label's but the salsa world's biggest stars – Ray Barretto, Willie Colón, Johnny Pacheco, Rubén Blades, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, Bobby Cruz, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, and special guests like Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and Eddie Palmieri.

In 1955, Louis Armstrong, along with vocalist Velma Middleton, got into the studio to pay tribute to the late Fats Waller. All the standards are here: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," "Ain't Misbehavin," rendered in fine and mellow but gently, genially swinging fashion. Armstrong's trumpet is superb and his voice carries the good-time spirit of Waller's music.

Dub Side of the Moon is a dub reggae tribute to the 1973 Pink Floyd album, The Dark Side of the Moon, co-produced by Easy Star All-Stars founders Michael G (Michael Goldwasser) and Ticklah (Victor Axelrod).

With CTI Records having gone independent in 1970, founder Creed Taylor celebrated the early success of the label with a one night only concert at the Hollywood Palladium on July 18, 1971. Taylor handpicked a dream team of CTI artists for California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium, with GEORGE BENSON on guitar, FREDDIE HUBBARD on trumpet, HUBERT LAWS on flute, STANLEY TURRENTINE on tenor saxophone, HANK CRAWFORD on alto saxophone, JOHNNY HAMMOND on organ and electric piano, RON CARTER on bass, BILLY COBHAM on drums and AIRTO MOREIRA on percussion.

In early 1949, Rumsey was in search of a playing job and came across the Lighthouse Club on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, which he felt would be an ideal place to play music.

Some of the most talented young jazz cats around. The All-Stars wrap up the 2017–18 season with an exciting afternoon of music in the lovely Miner Auditorium. Each spring, SFJAZZ commissions an original big-band work by an alumnus of the High School All-Stars program. We are thrilled to share with friends, fans, and family the amazing music the All-Stars have been honing this season.
