Limited ediition box set of maestro Hozan Yamamoto's extraordinary jazz output.Hozan Yamamoto caused a sensation when he made these albums. The ten jazz albums in this box set were released between 1967-1986 and include some live recordings such as 'Hakone Hachiri' 'Midare' and 'So Tired' from the 1967 Newport Jazz Festival. The box set also presents a bonus disc featuring an unreleased performance from November 4th, 1975.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover, and going by 'Jazz Rock’, nor a record by its title. Though entering into jazz territory and featuring some distorted guitar, 'Jazz Rock' is more a beautiful marriage of funky breakbeat drumming and spiritual jazz instrumentation, combined with traditional Min'yō music performed on the koto and shakuhachi.

One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp.
