Manolo Caracol (born Manuel Ortega Juarez) was one of the greatest vocalists in the history of flamenco music. His many recordings and film appearances made him one of Spain's top artists of the mid-20th century. An extremely passionate singer, he attracted attention at a very young age. Affectionately known as Nino de Caracol, he acquired a solid reputation for his singing at local fiestas. At the age of 13, he placed first in a singing contest, the Lorca Cante Jondo competition, in Granada. Although the Spanish Civil War prevented him from performing at public fiestas and theaters, he continued to appear at private functions.
Directed by legendary Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura, FLAMENCO, FLAMENCO is an evolutionary musical journey through the light, song and dance of a dynamic and alive art form. Beautifully photographed by famed Academy Award(R)-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (APOCALYPSE NOW), and showcasing a powerful new Flamenco through dazzling musical and dance performances by emerging talents and the greatest living Flamenco masters, this unique musical odyssey reaches beyond the borders of Flamenco and Spanish culture toward a universal artistic expression.
On this CD, Isao Nakamura presents a selection of works for solo percussion which – despite some very demanding technical passages – do not focus primarily on technical brilliance but on clear, focused artistic ideas, as well as, in some cases, extra-musical concepts. The main focus here is on drums. As the only instruments tuned to a specific pitch, in this CD the timpani features in two movements of Elliott Carter's "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani" and in Peter Eötvös's "Thunder".
