Born to Be Hurt: The Anthology 1966-1982 Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
At 29 tracks on a single CD, Raven's 2004 release Born to Be Hurt: The Anthology 1966-1982 is by far the biggest Sandy Posey collection yet released, and it's also the most comprehensive, being the first collection to cover all of her major labels. Prior to this, the two main Posey CDs, Collectables' 1996 release The Best of Sandy Posey and RPM's 2002 disc A Single Girl: The Very Best of the MGM Recordings, covered only her MGM recordings, which admittedly were her most popular work, containing the hit singles "Born a Woman," "Single Girl," "I Take It Back," and "What a Woman in Love Won't Do." However, her story did not end there. After leaving MGM in 1968, she turned toward country, signed with Columbia, and went through several labels during the '70s – Monument, Warner, and, finally, Audiograph in the early '80s – before leaving the music business, and Born to Be Hurt is the first time any of this material has been released on CD.

'I’ve Always Kept A Unicorn is the best album that Sandy Denny never made. This 40-Track / 2CD set captures Sandy at her most intimate as she runs through stripped down arrangements of songs with Strawbs, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, The Bunch and from her 4 solo albums. Exclusive to this set are 3 demos from the original recording sessions for the 1972 Bunch album, “Rock On” including a beautiful duet with Linda Thompson on Phil Everly’s “When Will I Be Loved” and Buddy Holly’s “Love Made A Fool Of You” and “Learning The Game”.

Island's single-disc Sandy Denny compilation does its best to offer a compact overview of the iconic singer's work. Focusing on the four records completed before her death in 1978, the 17-track Listen Listen winds comfortably through career highlights like "The North Star Grassman and the Raven," "Blackwaterside," and the gorgeous title track. Fans will contest the omission of tracks like "Carnival" and "It Suits Me Well," but for such a slim collection – considering Denny's invaluable work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and the Strawbs – Listen Listen is a fine introduction to the artist's later days.

Sandy Bull is known for some of the first extended instrumental compositions for guitar that incorporated elements of folk, jazz, and Indian and Arabic-influenced dronish modes. This album, taken from two nights of performances in February 1969 recorded at San Francisco's legendary Matrix, finds Bull experimenting with guitar electronics, as well as working out on the acoustic instruments that were the mainstay of his Vanguard Records Fantasias and Inventions albums. Percussionist SANDY NELSON was not merely the biggest, but just about the only major drum star of the 'Golden Era' of the Rock & Roll Instrumental. This set, which anthologises his 1962 releases, is complementary to an earlier Jasmine compilation, 'Teen Beat, 1959-61'. 1962 was a watershed year in Nelson's early career, in that he released an astonishing six LPs, four of which ('Drums Are My Beat', 'Drummin' Up A Storm', 'Golden Hits' and 'Compelling Percussion') made the US album charts. He also issued six singles that year, of which five ('Drums Are My Beat', 'The Birth Of The Beat', 'Drummin' Up A Storm', 'All Night Long' and 'And Then There Were Drums') made the US Top 100. Due to constraints in playing time, it is not possible to include his entire 1962 output, so a couple of LP cuts have been omitted. Nonetheless this is as comprehensive a collection of his 1962 recordings as is physically possible to compile onto a 2-CD set.

Sandy Denny performed on the BBC as a solo artist quite a bit between the years of 1966 and 1973, a span that saw her evolve from an obscure folk singer to Britain's finest folk-rock vocalist. Twenty tracks from the early '70s were briefly available on the 1997 release The BBC Sessions 1971-1973, but unfortunately that CD went out of print after its limited edition immediately sold out. A decade later, the four-disc box set Live at the BBC rectified that wrong and then some. It includes not only all of the material from The BBC Sessions 1971-1973, but 23 additional cuts as well, along with a DVD disc containing footage of the only three surviving songs she performed on BBC television. There's also an interesting seven-minute interview from 1972, and Denny also provides insightful comments on her songs between the tracks taken from her 1973 session for the Sounds on Sunday program.
