The Gipsy Kings are a group of flamenco, salsa and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier in the south of France, who perform in the Spanish language with an Andalusian accent. Although group members were born in France, their parents were mostly gitanos, Berber-Moroccan and Spanish gypsies who fled Catalonia during the 1930s Spanish Civil War. They are known for bringing Catalan rumba, a pop-oriented music distantly derived from traditional flamenco music, to worldwide audiences. The group originally called itself Los Reyes. Their music has a particular rumba flamenca style, with pop influences; many songs of the Gipsy Kings fit social dances, such as salsa and rumba. Their music has been described as a place where "Spanish flamenco and gypsy rhapsody meet salsa funk".

Swiss trumpeter / flugelhorninst Franco Ambrosetti opens his Lost Within You with "Peace," from the pen of pianist Horace Silver. The original rendition comes from Silver's Blowin' The Blues Away (Blue Note, 1959). It was a composition that Silver stumbled upon when he was "doodling around on the piano, and it just came to me." It featured Blue Mitchell's characteristically brassy trumpet tone. It was unusual in the Silver songbook—an introspective, patiently deployed ballad, instead of the normal hard-charging, romps that dominate his music.

Pianist Roberto Fonseca's Zamazu contains quite a bit of variety. From Afro-Cuban jazz and a piece that is closer to Indian music, to Omara Portunodo's passionate vocal on "Mil Congojas," originals that sound like tangos and sambas from the 1930s, and orchestral numbers, there is much to savor throughout this continually colorful set. Fonseca can play with great intensity (sometimes hinting at McCoy Tyner) but is at his best caressing lyrical and traditional-sounding melodies. Recorded in Cuba and Brazil, this colorful set leans more towards Cuban than Brazilian music, with Fonseca being quite impressive as both a pianist and a composer. Highly recommended.
