This disc strikes me as an ideal introduction to the music of Turkey’s greatest composer. Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s style might be described as “Szymanowski with a primal rhythmic feel.” If you love the composer’s First Violin Concerto then you will find here a very similar exoticism, nocturnal atmosphere, and love of voluptuous textures. The harmonic style is intensely chromatic, but also highly melodic. Like Bartók in his last period, Saygun’s handling of tonality mellowed toward the end of his life, which makes the Cello Concerto more consonant than the Viola Concerto, but both works are absolutely gorgeous and masterpieces of their kind. It’s positively criminal that no one plays these pieces regularly in concert. The performances here are excellent. Tim Hugh is a well-known cellist, and he pours on the tone with all of the rhapsodic abandon that Saygun requires. Mirjam Tschopp also is a superb violist, with a big, beefy tone that never gets swamped by the intricate orchestration. It’s also very rewarding to hear a Turkish orchestra in this music–and to find that it plays beautifully under Howard Griffiths.

Sinan Dizmen and Elif Önal, who are faculty members and colleagues at Ankara University State Conservatory, have been working together for more than 5 years. Having a wide and rich repertoire from the classical period to the contemporary period, the duo aimed to bring together the important works of the cello and piano repertoire, especially the works of Turkish composers, to the concert programs and to meet the audience. Within the mission of Gedik Art to support contemporary music movements, Kamran Ince, Ahmed Adnan Saygun, Arvo Part and Paul Hindemith will be featured in a concert in line with the exhibition titled An / Anı.

Having surveyed Ahmed Adnan Saygun's symphonies, CPO turns to the 20th-century Turkish master's four string quartets. The "wonderfully evocative folk melos" my colleague David Hurwitz referred to in the symphonies organically interfaces with Saygun's terse chromatic language and perennially fresh string textures. The first two quartets (from 1947 and 1958) stand out on account of their expressive breadth and communicative immediacy. I love the First Quartet's Adagio, with its long, overlapping legato lines that are anchored by the gentlest pizzicato pokes. The Allegretto is a minuet whose sweet sadness is conveyed by the string writing's remarkable delicacy and refinement.

The cello is said to be the instrument most similar to the human voice. On his new GENUIN CD, the outstanding cellist Dorukhan Doruk brings out the vocal qualities of the cello and its ability to let the tones shine. On the recording, he plays exclusively works for cello solo of the 20th and 21st centuries, including two works by great Turkish composers, namely Ahmed Adnan Saygun and Fazil Say, as well as compositions by Gaspar Cassado, Ernest Bloch, and Giovanni Sollima. The winner of multiple international prizes has recorded a program 'From Darkness into Light', which ranges from Saygun's veiled sounds to Sollima's virtuoso caprices. Exciting new territory!

Towards the end of the 19th century, ´several composers were taking a new interest in folk music. Folk tunes, or imitations of them, had previously mainly been used in order to provide ‘local colour’ or as a way of catering to nationalist sentiments, but it was now seen as a means to revitalize art music itself, opening up for new possibilities in terms of rhythm and harmony as well as melody. At the forefront of this development was Béla Bartók, who also considered the use of folk elements as a tool to transcend boundaries – to achieve a ‘brotherhood of peoples’.

The late '90s saw the first widespread interest in North America regarding various Asian psych scenes from the 1960s and beyond, with broad-ranging compilations soon being supplanted by even more specialized efforts. 2001's Hava Narghile, the first in a proposed series, looks specifically at Turkey's homegrown rock efforts from 1966 to 1975…

“Views from Ararat” - Masterpieces by great composers from Armenia and Turkey. Ararat is a famous mountain. Noah's ark is said to have been stranded on it after the flood. Christian Armenians see the mountain as a national symbol, even though it is not located in Armenian territory, but on Turkish soil near the Armenian border. The border crossing is closed, however, as relations between the two countries have long been strained because of the Armenian Genocide. This mass murder of Armenians in 1915 is denied by the Turkish government.
