Rick Stein journeys from northern California to Mexico, enjoying unique dishes and the enduring legacy of Mexico. It was 1968, and having heard the Mamas and Papas' California Dreaming, Rick was filled with a desire to embark on his own road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway to the Mexican border and beyond.

Quand Leo Stein s'installe à Paris à la fin de l'année 1902, sa sœur Gertrude ne tarde pas à le rejoindre, suivie de près par Michael, l'aîné, venu avec sa femme Sarah. Issus d'une famille juive aisée établie en Californie - leur père gère le tramway de San Francisco -, ils bénéficient d'un taux de change avantageux qui leur permet d'acquérir les toiles de jeunes artistes, dont ils acceptent sans préjugés les recherches plastiques les plus audacieuses. Michael et Sarah, qui vouent une admiration inconditionnelle à Matisse, organisent rapidement leur collection autour des œuvres du peintre fauve. De leur côté, Leo et Gertrude (puis Gertrude et sa compagne Alice Toklas) accrochent des Cézanne, des Picasso, mais aussi des Gauguin ou des Juan Gris sur les murs de leur appartement. Le 27 rue de Fleurus, dans le sixième arrondissement, devient ainsi le centre névralgique de l'avant-garde de l'époque. Des peintres, des poètes venus de toute l'Europe, des écrivains américains (Fitzgerald, Hemingway…) se bousculent aux portes de ce premier "musée" de l'art moderne.

Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a lovely young conservative Jewish girl with the perfect loft situated on New York City's Upper West Side, a fun job working for a hip newspaper, and beautiful clothes. The only thing she doesn't have is the ideal boyfriend. Not that she doesn't have tons of dates: from geeky nerds to suave sexy types, Jessica is sought after by throngs of men. She just doesn't like any of the guys who like her. When her coworker, Joan (Jackie Hoffman), reads her an ad from the personals of the Village Voice, Jessica knows she's interested. Even when she realizes that the ad is in the "women seeking women" section, she figures it's worth a try.

Rick Stein celebrates John Betjeman's long love affair with the English seaside holiday and his deep affection for Cornwall. He travels around the area, speaking to people who remember the poet's visits, including Cliff Snell, who founded the Betjeman Centre. The programme culminates in a seafood feast cooked by Rick for guests including Betjeman's daughter, Candida.

Jessica Stein is a single, straight, successful, journalist, part of a bonded Jewish family living in New York City, who finds herself not as straight as she thought when Jessica meets and begins an intense friendship with career woman Helen Cooper which ultimately leads to romance.
