Viktoria Mullova and Alasdair Beatson present their first release with Signum Classics. Performed on a period-style fortepiano and gut strings, the works presented on this recording span the final decade of Schubert’s life. Beginning with the Sonata in A of 1817, its lyrical, wistful opening giving way to a Viennese joy and exuberance.

Sparkling new accounts of Schubert’s violin-and-piano music from two luminaries of the Finnish period-instrument scene.
The Bulgarian violinist Zefira Valova graduated from the National Music Academy of her native Sofia, Bulgaria, before specialising in Baroque violin studies with Lucy van Dael. While still based in her homeland, having founded Bulgaria’s only annual early-music festival (Sofia Baroque Arts Festival) she is a frequent soloist with and guest leader of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra under its founder-director Aapo Häkkinen, who swaps the conductor’s platform on this occasion for a seat at a gentle, plangent-sounding fortepiano from 1820 of Viennese manufacture – ideally suited to the repertoire at hand.

Johanna Martzy (1924-1979) became a cult figure on the basis of a handful of recordings – but only after her premature death, an event that passed almost unnoticed. The meteoric career of this distinguished ambassadress of the Hungarian violin school in no way foretold her posthumous idolisation. And yet her historic recordings of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas and stunning readings of Schubert’s complete works for violin and piano, together with a few first-class concerto discs, make up a legacy whose scarcity has driven prices sky high. At last, collectors can stop trying to outbid one another: remastered in high definition from the original tapes, this priceless treasure trove is now available to all.

Schubert’s music for violin and piano, while certainly not negligible, has never caught the fancy of players or listeners in large numbers. It ranges from the three sonatas (miscalled ‘sonatinas’), which seem clearly to have been aimed at the domestic, amateur market rather than the concert hall, to his last two works for the medium, just as clearly aimed at the virtuoso.

Carolin Widmann, who received praise and awards both for her accounts of Schumann’s violin sonatas and for the recital disc “Phantasy of Spring” (with music of Feldman, Zimmermann, Schoenberg and Xenakis) now applies her acute interpretive sensibilities to Franz Schubert. Widmann and Alexander Lonquich (whose own New Series disc with music of Schumann and Holliger was also a critical success) play the C-Major fantasy of 1827 and the Violin Sonata in A of 1817, as well as the B minor Rondo of 1826 (the only one of these works published in Schubert’s lifetime). This is duo playing at a very high level, as Hans-Klaus Jungheinrich emphasizes in the liner notes.

Schubert wrote relatively little for the combination of piano and violin, but his output displays an astonishing variety of form and even ambition. The Sonata in A major op. posth. 162 of 1817 was the last of his contributions to what one might call ‘domestic music-making’. Ten years later, coming after the ‘Rosamunde’ and ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartets, the Rondo op.70 is an amazingly vital ‘rondo brillant’, while the Fantasy in in C major emerges as a model of lightweight cheerfulness. Disconcerting simplicity on the very edge of the abyss…

Ingrid Haebler became one of the 20th Century's leading interpreters of the Viennese classic piano composers. She came to the piano as a little girl, making her public debut in Salzburg at the age of eleven. She studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum, the Vienna Academy, and the Geneva Conservatory. She also was a pupil of the French pianist Marguerite Long., She won two prizes in 1954, one in Geneva and one in a Schubert competition at Geneva. She won the Harriet Cohen Beethoven Medal in 1957. While she has toured widely, she has made her international reputation with her finely judged recorded performances. These include all of Mozart's piano concertos, in two traversals of that cycle, all of Mozart's piano sonatas, all of Schubert's sonatas, and significant amount of the piano music of Haydn and Beethoven.

SCHUBERT: SONGS WITHOUT WORDS is an elegant recital by pianist Daria Hovora and cellist Mischa Maisky that allows us to hear Schubert songs, beautifully rich as they are with the texts as sung by many of our finest singers, here solely for the instrumental line. Somehow the interplay between melody and accompaniment (always an equal partnership in Schubert's hands) is heightened by this experience. Not that the entire album is appropriated by the cello standing in for a vocalist: the opening work is "Sonata for Arpeggione and Klavier" and is one of the highlights of the CD. But just listen to the performances of 'Standchen', 'An die Musik' and 'Du bist die Ruhe' and hear the extraordinary marriage between the piano and cello, singing as beautifully as any other version. This is one of those CDs that bears keeping out for multiple listenings in the late evening.
