It's hard to say that Buddy Guy's career was revived by his appearance in the Rolling Stones' Shine a Light, but his mesmerizing duet on Muddy Waters' "Champagne and Reefer" in that Martin Scorsese concert film was a bracing, welcome reminder of just how good Guy is, especially for listeners who may have let their attention wander in the years since Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. What made Guy so riveting was his coiled aggression: in stark contrast to the deferential Jack White, he came to cut the Stones down and he did so mercilessly, which made it the musical highlight of a show with plenty of great moments. That wildness has kept Buddy Guy unpredictable well into his senior citizenship, and it surfaces on Skin Deep, only perhaps not quite as often as it should…

Starting his jazz career in 1938 in Joe Marsala’s band he went on to play with the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw and Harry James…

Apparently, Buddy Guy subscribes to the theory "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Losing commercial ground to the blonde young guns of Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Guy hired their producer, David Z., and set out to record an album of loud, frenzied blues-rock. Purists will cringe at the unabashed commercial concessions Guy makes on Heavy Love - sure, he covers "Midnight Train," but it's a duet with Johnny Lang, and it complements the funkified "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," the psychedelicized licks, and the ZZ Top cover ("I Need You Tonight") heard elsewhere. Nevertheless, Heavy Love works well when compared to the modern electric blues of the post-Stevie Ray Vaughan era, especially since Guy once again contributes some scorching solos. Granted, his playing may veer too close to rock for some tastes, but anyone wanting an uninhibited, hard rocking Buddy Guy record won't be disappointed with Heavy Love.

Live at Legends captures the raging bluesman during a blistering set at his club in early 2010, playing pretty much exactly what you'd expect: "Damn Right I Got the Blues," "Best Damn Fool," and medleys of "I Just Want to Make Love to You/Chicken Heads," "Boom Boom/Strange Brew," and "Voodoo Chile/Sunshine of Your Love." That said, this isn't a complaint. While it's true that Guy and his crack band have his show down cold - this same basic set has been around for at least a decade with some additions and substitutions made while on tour playing larger venues - they throw down each and every time. Given that this is his club, the senses of immediacy and a certain closeness are present here whereas they're missing on other live recordings.

Avid Jazz presents four classic Buddy De Franco albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered double CD.
“Buddy De Franco”; “The Artistry of Buddy De Franco”; “Mr. Clarinet”; “Pretty Moods” plus selections from “Jazz Tones”.
Reading the original liner notes from all our classic Buddy De Franco selections one strand of opinion stands out head and shoulders above all others. Since 1945 when he started his long run of Poll Winners victories in Metronome and Downbeat magazines, he had become the new kid on the block a.k.a. Mr Clarinet! All the notes refer to there being only two really fully recognisable giants of the jazz clarinet up to the emergence of Buddy De Franco…

This Sony UK 2013 two-fer pairs two latter-day albums from Buddy Guy: the 2005 album Bring 'Em In and its 2008 sequel, Skin Deep. The Steve Jordan-produced Bring 'Em In and the Tom Hambridge-produced Skin Deep are both cut from the same cloth and feature a bunch of cameos – Keith Richards, John Mayer, and Tracy Chapman on the former; Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton, and Robert Randolph on the latter – and if neither are standouts in his discography, they're both enjoyable and this is a nice, easy way to get them both simultaneously.

Rock & Roll

Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), known professionally as Buddy Holly, was an American musician and singer-songwriter who was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. He was born in Lubbock, Texas, to a musical family during the Great Depression, and learned to play guitar and sing alongside his siblings. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music, and rhythm and blues acts, which he performed in Lubbock with his friends from high school…
