A former U.S. Marine turned Mercury Records staff producer responsible for everything from Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" to Ray Stevens' "Ahab the Arab," Shelby Singleton formed his Nashville-based SSS International Group in 1966. Although best known for fare like Jeannie C. Riley's country-pop juggernaut "Harper Valley P.T.A.," SSS and its spinoffs, Silver Fox and Minaret, also generated a vast sampling of deep-fried soul, of which Kent's "Southern Soul Showcase: Cryin' in the Streets" represents the first official digital survey to date. In comparison to the backwoods soul wrought in places like Memphis and Muscle Shoals, SSS productions are clearly the product of Nashville the songs blur the lines between soul and country to the point where such distinctions become irrelevant.

In recent decades, both Reminiscing and Showcase have enjoyed less than stellar reputations among Buddy Holly fans and '50s rock purists, as both albums were made up of the products of producer Norman Petty's posthumous redubbing of Holly's unfinished demos. Apart from the bizarre inclusion of "Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie" – a B-side chosen by Petty for the single of the title track – Reminiscing is a very solid album, and was essential to the maintaining of Holly's memory, reaching number three in a six-month run on the U.K. charts in 1963; one can just about lay odds that various members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were among the listeners of this album or its successor.

This double reissue combines saxophonist Frank Foster's first U.S. recording and a session led by pianist George Wallington that took place one week later with Foster sitting in. Recorded for Blue Note in Hackensack, NJ, on May 5, 1954, Here Comes Frank Foster (also issued as New Faces, New Sounds) was only Foster's second album as a leader. His debut album was recorded one month earlier for the Vogue label in Paris, France. Here Comes Frank Foster fits neatly with other albums from the mid-'50s Blue Note catalog.
