French saxophonist Sophie Alour's Opus 3 is not only her third album as a leader, it is also her first in a trio setting. The recipient of the French Django D'or award, Alour departs from the electric intensity of her previous release, Uncaged (Nocturne, 2007), to explore her voice as an instrumentalist. The 11 originals are tone poems bearing heavy western classical influences, with occasional peppering of other styles that showcase the leader on both tenor and soprano saxophones.

It is on an extraordinary instrument that the french pianist Cyril Huvé performs selected works of Liszt, Schubert, Debussy and Scriabin. His disc-recital is called Opus 102, the name of the piano designed by Stephen Paulello. The former teacher and tuner released the sounding board and expanded the traditional Steinway ambitus to favor the production of a « high fidelity » sound, capable of restoring all the richness of the repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Since he released the completely solo For Alto in 1968, the accepted image of Anthony Braxton has been that he is more a theoretician and art music composer than a jazz musician. Therefore, it might seem strange that Mosaic Records is giving his Complete Arista Recordings one of their fabled box set treatments. But Braxton is both – and much more. This set – as well as the original Arista recordings – were produced by Michael Cuscuna, Mosaic/Blue Note label head. The sheer scope of these recordings is staggering.
