A Lot of Livin' to Do introduces Jonathan Poretz, an impressive new crooner whose singing sometimes recalls Mel Tormé (particularly on the more up-tempo material) but is fresh and original within the genre. Poretz has an attractive voice, he swings, and he shows versatility on the high-quality standards. High points include "A Lot of Livin' to Do," "I'll Remember April" and "On the Street Where You Live." Poretz's backup group is very jazz-oriented and there are quite a few excellent solos from Noel Jeweks (on four different instruments) and pianist Lee Bloom. Overall, this is a very impressive effort.

This is the final chapter of a trilogy of albums in which I explored and arranged popular songs. The entire project was made in collaboration with vocalists Theo Bleckmann and Kate McGarry, pianist Gary Versace, and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. For the first recording, Songs I Like A Lot, I selected the majority of the songs for the album. Many of the songs I chose were from my childhood, and as I started to really listen to them again, I was surprised by how well I actually knew them. The second recording, Songs We Like A Lot, is composed primarily of songs that Theo and Kate liked and chose for me to arrange. Uri Caine held down the piano chair on this recording. And for this third and final recording, Songs You Like A Lot, we asked listeners to nominate their favorite songs for me to arrange. We then had an internet-wide vote on a list of nominated songs, and I chose (with the help of Kate, Theo and Gary) from the top 20 most popular songs.

Exactly as advertised, Travers & Appice is a collaboration between two classic rock icons: guitarist and vocalist Pat Travers, of numerous '70s solo guitar hero records fame, and drummer Carmine Appice, ex-member of Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne – heck, you name it! Paired together by the Steamhammer/SPV label, the duo cut 2004's brashly hard-rocking It Takes a Lot of Balls with the help of journeyman bassist T.M. Stevens, who has previously worked with James Brown, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, and many more.

This album starts out promisingly (and interestingly, and misleadingly) with a cool acoustic number, "Country Hat," before the amplification gets cranked up and a lot of subtlety goes out the window. Still, this is generally an exciting album, if not always an interesting one. The band plays hard enough on grinding, crunchy shouters like "Reap What I've Sowed" (which features a wondering, soaring solo by Peter Haycock, and a spellbinding performance by Derek Holt on bass), which also parallels Mountain's contemporary release "Mississippi Queen"; and they bring back in that oft-overlooked instrument, the saxophone (played by Colin Cooper), on "Brief Case." Much of the rest is on the bland side, " "Alright Blue?" being a tedious workout for the harmonica as lead instrument.
