Veteran folksinger Bob Gibson had been a friend of Shel Silverstein's long before he devoted an album to singing compositions by the country and novelty songwriter. Silverstein, the author of "The Cover of Rolling Stone" and "A Boy Named Sue," supplied Gibson with a characteristic collection of mostly comic story songs for this release. "The Man Who Turns the Damn Thing Off and On" poked fun at automation, for example, while "Golden Kiss" was the tale of a country songwriter who encounters the ultimate country music muse so she says, anyway and "Makin' a Mess of Commercial Success" was a first-person account of a beer drinker's recruitment to make a beer commercial.

Gegenwärtig gibt es weltweit gerade mal neun Bratschen aus der Werkstatt des berühmten Instrumentenbauers Antonio Stradivari. Eine davon, die Stradivari Viola "Gibson" 1734, wird von dem Bratschisten Lech Antonio Uszynski gespielt. Benannt ist dieses Kleinod nach dem Engländer George Alfred Gibson (1849-1924), der Professor für Violine an der Königlichen Akademie in Berlin war sowie ein berühmter Solist und Bratschist im renommierten «Joachim-Quartett», in dem er das Instrument spielte. Mit dieser "Vergangenheit" gehört die "Gibson"-Bratsche momentan zu einem der wertvollsten Musikinstrumente weltweit.

By 1970 when Don Gibson signed to Hickory Records, he was already a weathered music industry veteran, successful songwriter and performer. Despite enormous success on the charts, he sent 22 songs into the Top Ten between 1956 and 1974, by the end of the ’60s Don’s album sales were dwindling. Gibson signed to Hickory at the invitation of Wesley Rose who had first signed Don to a publishing deal at Acuff-Rose in 1955. With Rose in the producer chair, Gibson was ready for a second act. His first album for the label was an all covers affair, no Gibson original compositions.

Never deliberately flashy, Don Gibson had an unerring ability to take complex emotions and turn them into deceptively simple-sounding songs, and as any songwriter knows, that's far from an easy trick to pull off, but Gibson did it time and time again. Unassuming to a fault, his best songs like "Sweet Dreams" (a hit initially for Faron Young in 1955 but ultimately defined a few years later by Patsy Cline's version), "Oh Lonesome Me" (slowed down, a key track on Neil Young's After the Gold Rush album), and "I Can't Stop Loving You" (covered by countless artists, but most notably by Ray Charles) are models of graceful construction (amazingly, the latter two songs were written by Gibson in a trailer park on the exact same afternoon).
