This bizarre film by one of the most original directors now working in Germany is hermetic, expressionist, oblique, and of a creative perversity that bespeaks the presence of a genius. Purporting to deal with a real-life 19th century diva 'whose popularity was such that over-exertion led to her death while singing,' the film is actually a grisly series of frozen or tortured tableaux (predominantly lesbian in implication) of heavily rouged, frequently ugly women who, pretending to sing heavy opera, go through contorted, icy attempts at communication that lead nowhere. The lip-sync is off; the singing is off-pitch; mouths are frequently open while no sound issues forth, or closed, with mellifluous arias or cheap popular songs heard on scratchy renditions of old records.

Having arrived at Berkeley to host the premier of Errol Morris' Gates of Heaven, Werner Herzog removes his shoes, places them in a pot with garlic and other herbs, and walks barefoot to a shoe store. If this seems bizarre, it is only because you may not be familiar with the legendary exploits of the ridiculously ambitious German director. Herzog's career includes several uniquely bizarre anecdotes, and has resulted in unexpected fatalities (on the set of Fitzcarraldo), a promissory leap into a cactus patch (after wrapping Even Dwarfs Started Small, and for which he still has spines lodged in his knee), and the mutual death threats exchanged with frequent collaborator Klaus Kinski.

(Brian "Fitzcarraldo" Fitzgerald, a European living in a small city in Peru in the early part of the 20th century, has a great love of opera and an indomitable spirit. He is a great fan of the famous tenor Enrico Caruso and he dreams of building an opera house in his city of Iquitos. This will require a lot of money, and the most profitable industry in Peru at the time is rubber. The areas known to contain rubber trees have been parceled up by the Peruvian government and can be leased for exploitation.)

Faustrecht der Freiheit [Fox and His Friends] (1975) - Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Genre: Drama | Crime | Romance

The only starring role which Fassbinder played himself.

Fox and His Friends is one of Fassbinder's most poignant and accessible films. The story and performances are direct, and the look of the film is polished and inviting. Yet it is also a powerful work, dealing with some of Fassbinder's central themes, such of the search for love, and exploitation in its many forms (both gay and straight).

Die dritte Generation [The Third Generation ] (1979) - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
DVDrip | German | Subtitle: english, french, brazilian-portuguese, serbian | 1h44 | 608 x 456 | PAL (25fps) | XviD | MP3 @ 128kbps | 820 MB
Genre: Drama

German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder both directed and photographed The Third Generation (Die Dritte Generation). Displaying a sense of humor that can most kindly be described as perverse, Fassbinder follows the exploits of a group of well-heeled German terrorists. Without truly taking sides, the director demonstrates how the terrorists are essentially shooting themselves in the foot. The more havoc they spread, the tighter the government restrictions against other radicals. Eddie Constantine, the sang-froid leading man of many a Lemmy Caution espionage film, is ironically cast in The Third Generation.

Pioneers in Ingolstadt [Pioniere in Ingolstadt] (1970) - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
DVDrip | German | Subtitle: english, spanish, brazilian-portuguese, serbian | 1h27 | 608 x 456 | PAL (25fps) | XviD | MP3 @ 128kbps | 804 MB
Genre: Drama

Two years into his career as a feature filmmaker, this film brought Fassbinder his first invitation to Cannes and the New York Film Festival.

The film depicts the exploits of a group of German "pioneers" (soldiers sent to work on public projects) who are assigned to build a wooden bridge in the out-of-the-way town of Ingolstadt. They seek relief from the boredom of their project, and lives, through alcohol, sexual adventures with local women, and intermittent acts of violence.

Genre: Drama

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film adaptation of Theodor Fontane's 1894 novel.
Effi Briest (Hanna Schygulla) is a young woman who marries a middle-aged man (Wolfgang Schenck) hoping to make his way in politics. She is somewhat flighty and nervous, whilst he simply tells her not to be. She then has an affair, and the events play themselves out.
Fassbinder, as per usual, has created a masterful film that it is almost impossible to fault. The bold black and white cinematography looks stunning and enhances the mood of the film. The direction is clever and intriguing without ever being showy or distracting. The acting performances from first to last are perfect, with the silences and telling looks revealing as much of the characters as their words do. If you want to see how films could and should be made, look no further.

Werner Herzog and Andre Singer's riveting documentary, filled with unforgettable archive materials and based on three never before seen interviews, provides incredible access to arguably the world's greatest living politician. Now 88 and battling illness, the visionary Mikhail Gorbachev, the former General Secretary of the U.S.S.R., is still gently but resolutely pushing towards his goals. Herzog celebrates Gorbachev's three remarkable accomplishments: negotiations with the U.S. to reduce nuclear weapons, cessation of Soviet control of Eastern Europe and the reunification of Germany, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Eastern bloc. All of this in six years!

A film exactly described by its title. German film director Herzog had made a bet with fledgling director Errol Morris that, if Morris made a film, Herzog would eat his shoe. Morris went on to film 'Gates of Heaven', so Herzog kept his promise. While eating the boiled shoe, Herzog carries on a dialogue with the film premier audience on film, art, and life.
