Eunice Kathleen Waymon, better known by her stage name as Nina Simone (Tryon, United States, February 21, 1933 Carry-le-Rouet, France, April 21, 2003), American singer, songwriter and pianist of jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and soul. She is known by the nickname "High Priestess of Soul." The influence of Duke Ellington is clear in all of Nina's work, but especially in certain types of compositions brimming with improvisation and spiritual closeness. When she sang, she sometimes made striking transitions between whisper, scream and lament, to try to underline the moods enunciated in her songs. A great fighter for the civil rights of people of African descent, this fight is expressed on many occasions through her songs. Simone left the United States in 1969, after the assassination of Martin Luther King, tired of racial segregation against African Americans.

Thanks to a steady stream of reissues and her central role in Questlove's 2021 Summer of Soul documentary, Nina Simone has lately been accumulating some of the overdue praise she was denied in life. This fiercely gifted and intelligent pianist, who out of necessity eventually discovered her distinctive singing voice, was especially productive from 1964 until 1967 when she recorded most of what's on this compilation. That mid-'60s period is also when Simone moved from innocuous pop standards to protest songs, many of which she wrote or rearranged herself. Many of her best-known mid-period tunes are here: "I Put A Spell On You," “Sinnerman," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and the triumphant and justly famous 1964 live version of "Mississippi Goddam" from Carnegie Hall. This brief best-of is completed by the addition of her first hit, "My Baby Just Cares for Me" from 1957. What's new here are remixes of seven tunes whose original versions also appear on this reissue. Opener "Feeling Good," gets a ready-for-the-club makeover from DJ Joel Corry while dance duo Sofi Tukker, who've worked with Lady Gaga and Rodrigo y Gabriela, emphasize Simone's piano part on "Sinnerman" before settling into a standard dance beat. UK duo HONNE evade the dance beat sameness with a downbeat mix of "My Baby Just Cares For Me" that changes the melody entirely while leaving the words intact—an imaginative if not entirely successful reimagining—while the remix of "Take Care of Business" by drum and bass duo Rudimental adds a rumbling undercurrent to the original. The single comes from UK electro-pop band Hot Chip who slow "Be My Husband" and add a fat bass part on keyboards, synth flourishes, and looped reverb to Simone's voice, finishing with a shaking of tambourine. Though not quite the hoped-for hit, the efforts required for a remix adds to the body of respect and awe Simone's work righteously inspires.

Nina Simone was one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation, and also one of the most eclectic. Simone was a singer, pianist, and songwriter who bent genres to her will rather than allowing herself to be confined by their boundaries; her work swung back and forth between jazz, blues, soul, classical, R&B, pop, gospel, and world music, with passion, emotional honesty, and a strong grasp of technique as the constants of her musical career.

This compilation gathers 21 songs from a small period in the career of Nina Simone, the 1967-1968 era of the British hit "Ain't Got No (I Got Life)" and LPs like 1967's Silk & Soul. Those looking for a tight collection of Simone's crossover period will find much to love here, from "It Be's That Way Sometimes" and "The Backlash Blues" to covers of "I Shall Be Released," "Just Like a Woman," and "The Look of Love." The big caveat, however, is the presence of "Ain't Got No (I Got Life)" only in a live version, which makes this collection much more difficult to justify. It's worth picking up on a whim, but definitely not a careful search.

The story of Eunice Kathleen Waymon is that of an artist emblematic of the difficulty of being and being born in a country under the yoke of racial segregation. Nina Simone (The Word Nina, which means "little girl" in Spanish, is the nickname given to her by a boyfriend and Simone is borrowed from the actress Simone Signoret whom she saw in the film Casque d'or by Jacques Becker) is an American pianist, singer, songwriter and civil rights activist in the United States. Originally wishing to become a classical pianist, she eventually performed and radiated in various musical styles including jazz, blues, classical, soul, folk, R & B, gospel and pop.

2007 has been a banner year for Goldbergs; no less than five recorded versions of the piece had appeared by the end of July, including a digitally reinterpreted incarnation of Glenn Gould's famous 1955 recording and Wilhelm Middelschulte's bizarre, psychedelic 1924 transcription of the work for organ. In the face of such circumstances, no one would blame music critics for throwing up their hands and saying something like "enough already!" Nevertheless, thankfully the Goldberg Variations is not that kind of a piece, its appeal is both immutable and universal. Ultimately it comes down to the personality of the keyboard player to make something out of the Goldberg Variations that stands apart from the pack, and young pianist Simone Dinnerstein has managed to do that with her glorious rendering of Bach's cycle for Telarc. Her rendering of the Aria is slower than the norm and her approach to tempo throughout is very elastic; there is nothing rigid about her interpretation of the work. Dinnerstein's reading involves a great deal of give and take, seeking to deepen the expressive potential of Bach's music without losing sight of its basic shape.

Nina Simone was only 25 years old in 1958 when she entered Beltone Studios in midtown Manhattan for a one-day recording session for her debut album, Little Girl Blue,on Bethlehem Records. The 14 songs she recorded that day reveal just how well developed Simone’s sound — her powerhouse vocals, her classically-trained piano-playing, her inventive, genre-blind arrangements, and her dynamic personality — already was.
