Also known as “Guitar chop”, the guitar skank is an important part of reggae and dub music. Due to its playing technique, this particular guitar sound is often hard to get with plugins, even some of the modern ones. If you don’t play guitar, it’s likely you’ll never really acheive to get this sound right… and if you do play guitar, it’s always nice to have an instrument to quickly lay out your ideas. That’s why I created Le Skank.

EAC Rip | FLAC ((*tracks+.cue,scans)) | Run Time: 25:05:53 | 6,27 Gb | Scans - 174 Mb
Genre: Roots Reggae, Early Reggae, Jamaica Ska, Dub | Label: EMI Gold Imports

This whopping 30-CD box set gathers together the best of Trojan's three-disc box set series. Included are the Ska, DJ, Dub, Instrumentals, Jamaican Superstars, Lovers, Producer Series, Rocksteady, Roots, and Tribute to Bob Marley volumes, each of which can be found under Trojan Box Set for their individual reviews. What's lacking here is a booklet with additional notes and information; the bulk seems to demand some extra coverage and care, yet all that's here are the original notes of each volume – only as much text as can fit on the back of the CD sleeves. From a music standpoint, however, this box is excellent; a truly diverse and comprehensive collection. Of the 500 songs, less than ten reappear on another volume, so you get a more-than-satisfying amount of music spanning the history of the Trojan label.

This is a tremendous soundtrack. What especially stands out is the inclusion of film dialogue in some of the instrumental tracks. Another neat thing is the "Natural Mystic" version on this album has a nice ambient intro, with bugs and birds chirping as the rhythm kicks in, it really adds to the etheral nature of the track. The track by Human Cargo is a wicked sound-system smasher. Don't pass over this because it has alot of BMW tracks that you already own, there are some bonafide gems on this one. "Mosman Skank" is the original rhythm made famous later by Dennis Brown's seminal 80's cut "Promised Land".

Aston 'Family Man' Barrett is much more than just one of the most renowned reggae bass players of all time. As the bassist of choice for Bob Marley and the Wailers from 1969 up until Marley's untimely passing, Barrett acted as chief musical arranger and bandleader for the Wailers, greatly altering the course of reggae in the process. He has also been one of the most important Jamaican session musicians, beginning with the Hippie Boys in the late 1960s, and after helping reggae to become better established internationally as a member of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Upsetters band, he also performed bass duties for a range of noteworthy producers, including Bunny Lee and Keith Hudson, among many others.
