While pundits and experts debate whether the United States of America has entered an age of decline as a world power, New York saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and inveterate troublemaker Ed Palermo makes an incontrovertible case for un-American ascendance. With The Great Un-American Songbook Volume 3: Run for your Life, slated for release on guitarist/vocalist Bruce McDaniel’s Sky Cat label on November 6, 2020, he turns his attention to the music of the nation’s former colonial overlords. Focusing on material by Lennon and McCartney (and several acts that followed in The Beatles’ footsteps), one of jazz’s finest working big bands delivers another batch of reverently irreverent arrangements with enviable precision and improvisational aplomb.

Formed in 1965 in London, the band will slalom between progressive rock and psychedelic rock, offering soaring and experimental music, engaged and satirical texts, concept albums and bigger than life concerts, as the Anglo-saxons say … the saga will have three major chapters : the Syd Barrett era, the David Gilmour/Roger Waters era, the Waters era and the Gilmour era.

“Nel bosco non esistono confini, diceva mio padre. Lo ripeteva spesso come una formula da mandare a memoria, rivelatrice di una qualche verità che avremmo capito solo molto tempo dopo, una volta diventati adulti.” La narratrice di questa storia e cresciuta in una terra di confine, educata a uno spirito internazionalista dal padre, un pacifista di origini slave che credeva nel libero scambio delle persone, nelle lingue straniere mescolate senza regole e nelle camminate nel bosco. E proprio durante quelle lunghe passeggiate, fatte perlopiù in silenzio o scambiando osservazioni sulle tracce di un cerbiatto o una lepre, che il padre spiega alla figlia che non esistono confini, che il bosco e di tutti, non si divide per nazionalità come una cartina geografica: “hai mai visto una betulla ritrarre i rami per non sconfinare in territorio straniero?”..
