Fifty songs spread among two CDs, various attributed to Cher, Sonny & Cher, and even "Caesar & Cleo," through which we trace the evolution of this duo from a doo wop-influenced pop team into folk-rock and protest mavens, to the media's reigning early-'70s pop/rock team. The sound is very good, and the range of music is almost dizzying, as the influence of Phil Spector wafts in and out over the recordings, and the duo turns its talents toward just about every sound that was selling at the time. There's a huge amount of good music here, much of it familiar from other collections, including "Sunny," "I Feel Something in the Air," and "All I Really Want to Do" – other notable cuts, apart from such solo Sonny Bono stuff as "The Revolution Kind" and "Laugh at Me," include Cher's renditions of "Alfie" and "Needles and Pins" and her first, failed, "comeback" attempt, "Classified 1A."

Sonny & Cher's third album, and their last success for four years, lacked the unity of their earlier work. By the beginning of 1967, psychedelia was taking hold, but Sonny Bono was at a loss to write or produce music in that mode. Instead, he came up with "The Beat Goes On," a huge hit that sold the album.

It's difficult to complain about the contents of this double-disc set, including 38 songs drawn from Sonny & Cher's second era of success (1971-1974 on Kapp Records), nicely remastered and assembled in impeccably logical fashion. The duo's (and Cher's solo) studio cuts make up the first disc, while the second is comprised of songs from the duo's two live recordings done two years apart in Las Vegas.

After Cher's incredibly successful period in the 1960’s both as a solo artist and as part of the Sonny & Cher duo, "Cherilyn La Pier" as she was born, moved labels to MCA records and released her first album, simply called "Chér". Produced by the the legendary Snuff Garrett, it included Cher's first solo #1 hit, "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", which topped the U.S. charts at the end of 1971, reaching #4 in the U.K. She followed that with another track from the album, "The Way Of Love" which went into the American Top 10, staying in the charts for ten weeks. The album proved that Cher was a force to be reckoned with on her own. She released her second MCA album in 1972, "Foxy Lady" included Cher's third U.S. hit of the 1970’s, "Living In A House Divided", as well as material by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. Sonny Bono also contributed and co-produced one of the tracks.

Subtitled The All-Time Great Love Songs, this collection promotes the idea of Cher as torch ballad singer, a notion not as far-fetched as one would imagine. Taken from five different albums recorded during her '70s stay at the MCA and Kapp labels, "Blue" states a strong case for the lung power of Cher's vocal range, as well as her taste for challenging and off-the-beaten-path material. Her "Bittersweet White Light" album from 1973 (her first with a full orchestra) is here in its entirety, along with selections from "Foxy Lady", "Dark Lady", "Half Breed" and "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", all from Sonny & Cher's second wave of popularity and many featuring Sonny Bono at the production helm.

Inner Views Review by Lindsay Planer
Sonny Bono is among rock & roll's most depreciated and ironic figures. He was a multi-talented artist, producer, songwriter, and performer as well as unapologetically conservative in both his personal and political bents. The sole solo long-player of Bono's two-decade musical career, 1967's Inner Views has a title that fittingly describes its contents, which reflect the artist's sensibilities. Perhaps unintentionally, the album reinforces why Bono let his then professional partner and wife, Cher, take the vocals.
