A celestial journey is what Sun Ra and His Arkestra created with Space is the Place. Sun Ra’s opus, at its simplest, is a trip through outer-bound melodies, planetary bodies, eras in time, crystals, and space caravans. You will be transported a world away!

Call it what you will—Blaxploitation flick, Afrofuturistic science fiction, low-budget surrealism, Black-power manifesto—SPACE IS THE PLACE is the only film written by, scored by, and starring Sun Ra. Directed by John Coney, produced by Jim Newman, filmed in 1972, and released in 1974, it remains an iconic part of Ra's deeper cultural legacy and a touchstone for his fans. In too many cases, the title (also the title of an unrelated 1973 album on Blue Thumb) is the only thing uninformed Earthlings know about Sun Ra. It has become the Ra ur-cliché, a not-so-secret handshake. If all you know about Sun Ra is "Space is the Place," you don't know Ra.

In early 1973, thanks to the intrepid persuasion of jazz producer Ed Michel, Sun Ra signed a licensing agreement with the prestigious jazz imprint Impulse (then part of ABC/Paramount Records) to reissue catalog titles from Ra's proprietary Saturn label, as well as some new Arkestra recordings. Michel had produced Ra's most commercially successful album, Space is the Place, in 1972 for Blue Thumb Records, and he figured Ra was finally primed for a wider Earthly audience. The Impulse deal struck with Ra and manager Alton Abraham specified a cap of 50 albums — ten annually for five years — although all masters were subject to approval by Impulse and theoretically less than 50 could be issued.

Although The Space Age Is Here to Stay is technically a compilation, chances are good some of these tracks will be new to even the most serious Ra fans, as six of the 16 tracks are previously unreleased and those that have been released are largely from lesser-known albums. The tracks span from 1958 to 1985, with each decade represented by at least two tunes. The songs range from jazz standards to space declamations to pseudo-gospel call-and-response stompers, and feature not only Sun Ra but the great June Tyson, John Gilmore, and others. By and large, these tracks are on the obscure side and the songs that may be familiar are represented by different versions. "Enlightenment" gets a circus organ arrangement and vocals by Gilmore and Tyson.
