Freddie Hubbard got a bad rap from jazz critics while at Columbia – most absolutely hated the music he made there because it indulged pop, soul, funk, and even disco abundantly. He got the last laugh, though. The critics were wrong. Great Britain's BGO offers proof in this two-disc set that contains Hubbard's first three Columbia albums from the mid-'70s: High Energy (1974), the provocatively titled Liquid Love (1975), and Windjammer (1976). Hubbard employed his own quintet on High Energy (something he couldn't do previously at CTI), which was comprised of Junior Cook, George Cables, Kent Brinkley, and Ralph Penland.

On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, transforming into a hurtling roller coaster of a song that makes a great introduction to Strange House's mix of campy humor, energy, and menace. With its dive-bombing noise barely held together by Faris Badwan's shouting and the faintest hint of a melody, "Sheena Is a Parasite" is still the Horrors' best and most radical song, although several other tracks here rival its black-hearted thrills.

One of the best David Axelrod-assisted albums from the early 70s – a sweet batch of funky cuts with arrangements and backings handled by Axe, and loads of great keyboard lines from the legendary Hampton Hawes! The record really bubbles with the warm and soulful approach Axelrod was using at Fantasy – kind of a step off his stark modern sound at Capitol, but still done with just the right amount of space and appreciation of a funky rhythm. The great Carol Kaye is on bass, and Hawes plays some totally sweeeeeeeet electric keys on the set – really stretching out in ways that are different than some of his acoustic work of a few years before – yet still filled with the same rich sort of imagination. Titles include "Sierra Morena", "Go Down Moses", "Web", "Tune Axle Grease", and "C&H Sugar".

"V“ is the fifth album from The Horrors and their first new release in three years. The new album shows the group at the peak of their powers, exhibiting a freedom and sense of exploration that feels truly liberating. Recorded in London with producer Paul Epworth (fka twigs, Lorde, Rihanna, Adele), 'V' is the sound of the band making the most expansive and progressive music of their careers.

"Puzzle People" is the 11th studio album released by American soul quintet The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label in 1969. Produced entirely by Norman Whitfield, "Puzzle People" takes the next step along the path that "Cloud Nine" started, and takes the Temptations further away from a classic soul sound, and more towards the realm of psychedelic soul. Although a few ballads, including "Running Away (Ain't Gonna Help You)," are still present, the album is primarily composed of Sly & the Family Stone/James Brown-derived proto-funk tracks such as the lead single "Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down," and the #1 Billboard Pop hit "I Can't Get Next to You." Also included are psychedelic-styled covers (recorded with distorted guitars, clavinets, and spacy reverb and sound effects) of contemporary songs such as The Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing," The Beatles' "Hey Jude," and Roger Miller's "Little Green Apples."

Just pure, sweet, beautiful music from start to finish on this album. My favourite song is Moonza, full of soul and funk, jazzy and brilliant. In truth, all of the songs on this album are beautifully crafted and utterly joyful. That these two superb musicians only made one album together is a shame but what they did make will forever stand the test of time… they really do not make music like this anymore.
