Fusion, African | Country: South Africa | Label: African Cream Music - ACM CD035

Tracks 2,3.4,6 and 11 were originally released on the album Ubuntu — Humanity in 1996. Recorded at the SABC studios in Durban by Peter Thwaites. Mixed by Chris Lewis at Ronnie Scotts studios in London. Ubuntu-Humanity, Sipho Gumede's second solo album for M.E.L.T.2000 is a predominantly instrumental album featuring the cream of South African musicians and many other artists from the Outernational Meltdown, including Pops Mohamed, Madala Kunene, the late Moses Molelekwa, Mabi Thobejane, Barney Bophela and Zim Ncqawane. Ubuntu, an inherently African concept, encapsulates the values of being honest, sharing with those in need, passing on what you know to the young, respecting everyone, saving life at all costs and criticizing constructively.

There’s an old saying that a great jazz musician never plays a song the same way once. That could certainly be said of Jerry Bergonzi. He is an intellectual artist of uncompromising integrity and a bold, original composer. On Jerry’s new Savant recording he returns to the organ-tenor trio format after a long hiatus from it. From the opening track, Cy Coleman’s “Witchcraft” with its hypnotic organ vamp and “bewitching” chord substitutions Jerry gives to the first 8 bars, you know this isn’t going to be your parents’ organ-tenor gig. Bergonzi and his discmates, Renato Chicco on organ and Andrea Michelutti on drums, take these standards down new harmonic paths and use them as a launching pad for fertile and impressive improvisation. The playing is always intense and distinctive, fresh and spontaneous.

Whether you know his voice from ARK, Masterplan, Avantasia, Ayreon’s 01011001 album, or in collaboration with “Sir” Russell Allen, if your musical journey has ever taken you within earshot of power metal, you know Norway’s Jorn Lande very well. In his prodigious body of work as a solo vocal artist, his band is eponymously known simply as Jorn. His 2019 Live On Death Road has just been released to CD, MP3, DVD, and Blu-Ray, offering an impressive 50th Birthday look at the voice of so much of European metal in the last twenty years…

Experimental Rock, Psychedelic Rock | Label: Black Truffle Records (Australia)

The 9th release by Black Truffle’s core ensemble spits fire and psychedelic balm in a handful of durational pieces running up to 19 minutes long, ‘cuz, as we all know by now; they’re no 3 minute type of guys. Leading down the rabbit hole from ‘This Dazzling, Genuine “Difference” Now Where Shall It Go?’ [2017], their incendiary group intuition blazes a tortuous route between flaying, free metallurgy, astrally inclined hymns and devil’s-ass-kissing swagger in a way that makes most others look like generic plods.

Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats. It's impossible to overestimate the importance of the doors Butterfield opened: before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect, afraid of coming off as inauthentic. This collection includes the studio tracks recorded between 1965 and 1971.

Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees is Dogstar's third studio album. Features "Everything Turns Around." First things first: There is no discussing Dogstar without talking about the reason the trio is famous—bassist Keanu Reeves. And there is no dismissing the fact that they traded off his Hollywood fame in the late 1990s; what other band toured and got the chance to open for Bowie at the Palladium (in 1995) despite not having a radio hit or even an American release for three years after that? They were the quintessential "big in Japan" band and broke up after their last 2002 show there. But in March 2023, Dogstar played a Napa, California, music festival and let it be known that they were back—and releasing their first album in 24 years, with producer Dave Trumfio (Wilco, OK Go) at the board. It's solid, cleanly produced and age-appropriate adult-contemporary, but maybe not the most exciting record you've heard this year.

For their fourth release, a true Jazz supergroup, The Cookers, have swapped out saxophonist Craig Handy for Donald Harrison, raising the median age of the septet to just under 70. All of that longevity doesn’t mean complacency, however: The 69-year-old pianist George Cables, septuagenarians Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Billy Harper (tenor saxophone), Cecil McBee (bass) and Billy Hart (drums) and the Cookers’ two youngsters, Harrison (54) and trumpeter David Weiss (49) may bring well-defined personal styles to this ongoing project, but there’s nothing retro about them. The Cookers cook, all right, and if anything they’ve become even more assured, skillful and single-minded with each new offering.

Jazz / Jazz Funk / Acid Jazz / Groove

It won't take long – maybe ten seconds into the first cut – to know that the Meters are a primary influence on the U.K.'s New Mastersounds. The opening title track is such a ringer for "Cissy Strut" that you may check your CD sleeve to see if the discs weren't accidentally swapped. As the album unwinds, though, the all-instrumental quartet reveals more of its own identity: a sort of acid jazz mixed with crisp early-'70s funk grabbed from New Orleans' finest. Certainly drummer Simon Allen has been practicing to his Zigaboo Modeliste records, and it's his attack that principally drives the sound.
