Brilliant and charismatic pianist Yuja Wang is among the most prominent pianists in the world, becoming a star by age 21 and building a consistently growing career since then. Russian virtuoso music is at the center of Wang's repertory, but she has expanded into new musical realms. Yuja Wang (Wang Yuja in the Chinese naming system; Wang is her family name) was born in Beijing on February 10, 1987. An only child like most Chinese of her time, she grew up with a dancer mother and percussionist father. She took up the piano at six, was identified as a major talent, and took classes at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

The star pianist Yuja Wang releases her latest album with the live recording of her concert from April 2022 at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The eclectic program displays once more Wang’s fiery virtuosity, musical imagination and mature musicality in both lesser known and recognised masterpieces by Albéniz, Beethoven, Ligeti and Scriabin. The pianist commented on the selection: “I believe that every program should have its own life and reflect my current feelings.”

Sonatas by Beethoven, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Janáček display the artistry and pianistic firepower of Wynona Wang in live performances from the 2023 Sydney International Piano Competition, in which she was a popular finalist. As a finalist at The Sydney, Wang demonstrated a questing musical mind in her chosen solo repertoire. The Beijing-born, Juilliard-trained pianist explored the form and the expressive power of the Sonata as a genre through four landmark examples of the genre. Beethoven's 'Appassionata' stands among the tragic-heroic of his mid-period masterpieces.

Yuja Wang is one of the most technically astounding pianists of our time, with a command of the keyboard matched by sheer muscular strength. Here she turns her attention to Russia and some of its leading pianist-composers. The Rachmaninoff Preludes and Études-Tableaux are rich and swirl with passion, while Scriabin’s Tenth Sonata, a work of mystical imaginings, seethes with dangerous life under her fingers. Briefly looking further afield, a group of Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s tiny Études diverts the attention magically before Prokofiev’s Eighth Piano Sonata, his masterpiece in the form, which Wang characterizes with genuine originality and imagination.
