Star Trek emerged alongside mini-skirts, bellbottoms, and VW vans; flourished in the shadow of Madonna, big hair, and greed; and expanded with computers, Beanie Babies, and religious revitalization. Star Trek survived the culture shock of 9/11 and experienced a revival in the era of yoga pants, hybrid cars, and Starbucks. After more than 5 decades, Star Trek is alive and well, still voyaging through space and time. But, why is that? How has this science fiction franchise managed to anticipate and adapt to such rapid culture change?

The 2009 hit film Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, was essentially a re-start of the original five-year mission, for which IDW Publishing laid the groundwork for the story in the four-issue prequel comics series, (the complete miniseries is also posted here on Avax by bigsid--just search for it). Written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, and based on a story by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, introduced the character Nero and also spanned the gap between and the Enterprise’s earliest voyages in Star Trek. One of the biggest questions fans have about the Star Trek movie is "What was Nero doing for 25 years?" because the time between the attack on the USS Kelvin and the arrival of Spock and the Jellyfish is left blank. Well, will fill in that gap, with the same creative team behind . It is considered part of the ongoing rebirth of the Star Trek franchise for which IDW Publishing is playing an active part. The final issue #4 released November 25, 2009 contains the climactic confrontation between Nero and the elder Spock-leading up to the cataclysmic destruction of Vulcan.
