The Django Experiment is a project of The Stephane Wrembel Band to perform the music of Django Reinhardt in their own unique way, blending the Gypsy sound with the New York City energy and voodoo.
French guitarist Stephane Wrembel clearly emulates fellow countryman and musician Django Reinhardt. Yet Wrembel’s Reinhardt-influenced playing doesn’t lose charm for its easy-to-spot inspiration. Instead, GYPSY RUMBLE, recorded with Wrembel’s trio and special guest David Grisman on mandolin, fuses the gypsy jazz of Reinhardt with various world music influences and postmodern flourishes in fresh and exciting ways. The album comes highly recommended to fans of Reinhardt, gypsy music, or acoustic classical guitar.
Gypsy jazz guitar wizard Stephane Wrembel is a French-born, classically trained modern day Django Reinhardt. He rose to prominence for composing the unforgettable and wistful theme track to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which he followed up with the excellent full-length record Dreamers of Dreams. David Fricke, of Rolling Stone, calls him “a revelation” and Josh Baron, of Relix Magazine, remarks, “he is one of the greatest guitar players I’ve ever seen… and I don’t say that lightly.” This is perfect music for a midday IPA in our courtyard.
If French-born composer, guitarist, and musical gypsy Stephane Wrembel's name was not familiar to mainstream jazz fans even as he released this, his stellar, eclectic, world music-driven fifth release, his music was certainly known to discerning film fans. Woody Allen used his tune "Big Brother" in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and he composed the theme to Midnight in Paris (entitled "Bistro Fada") which he performed live at the Oscars; he includes that whimsical, lilting tune on Origins, a set that explores his many influences.
This album is a reflection of two years of touring all over the world, an exploration of the realm of dreams and a unique impressionist journey. Stephane’s seventh studio album takes you on a musical journey through image provoking compositions inspired by the band’s own worldwide experiences. You will experience a shamanic vision of the desert, the USA, Asia, Africa and Europe. You will be taken into the world of dreams of Castaneda, in the caves of Lascaux, or travel through space.

Experience our music live for the first time! For the first time you can hear the band perform live. Recorded multitrack live and mixed professionally, it doesn't get better! Guitarist Stephane Wrembel reached some level of notoriety when he was the man behind Woody Allen’s Gypsy-jazz-inspired film Sweet and Lowdown. He has gone on to do a few more soundtracks for Allen, as well as others. It is easy to see why he makes such a good choice for matching music to movies. His compositions, though completely instrumental, tell vivid stories all on their own.
