Steps Last Dance

This is the second in a two-part series focussing on the musical properties of the ‘square’ piano, an instrument largely unknown today, yet of great significance to a large sector of society, especially in Australia during its colonial days. To this end, the program includes works from the late eighteenth century as well as contemporary pieces that explore its particular sound qualities in different contexts. In use is an original square piano labelled Robertson of Liverpool c. 1835 by James Smith, semi-restored. Further instrumentation is provided by a Flemish reproduction harpsichord by Marc du Cornet.

We present 3 examples each, of 15 of the most popular dances, those that appear on major TV programmes broadcast throughout the world. From traditional classic routines such as the waltz, foxtrot and quickstep, through to more modern steps, as in jive and rock 'n' roll, and of course the vibrant Latin dances, salsa, rumba, samba and tango. There is not a comparable collection in the marketplace. This 3 CD set also serves as an excellant snapshot of 20th century music, so if the actual dancing is not your cup of tea, put your feet up and listen to major artists performing classic tracks.

2015 two CD collection. Steps were quite simply a phenomenon - one of the most successful pop acts of the 1990's. In 1999 their UK tour was the biggest pop arena tour ever staged, and in a period of four years they sold a remarkable 12 million records. The quintet - brought together by songwriters Barry Upton and Steve Crosby with manager Tim Byrne - was made up of three female vocalists and two male - Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian "H" Watkins and Lee Latchford-Evans. After the debut single '5, 6, 7, 8' which peaked at #14, Steps hit the top 5 with 14 consecutive single releases - which at the time was a feat previously achieved only by the Beatles. This set includes the group's #1 hits 'Tragedy' and 'Stomp, all five #2 hits 'One For Sorrow', 'Better Best Forgotten', 'Love's Got A Hold Of My Heart' 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel', and 'Chain Reaction', and the other hits and more. Also included are a clutch of extended remixes, and Steps version of the all-time greatest Christmas single - Slade's 'Merry Christmas Everybody'.
