This fabulous radio broadcast comes from The King's Head Inn, a tiny venue popular with students near the Old Dominion University campus, in Norfolk, Virginia, that could accommodate barely 100 people. Luckily, local radio station WNOR was on hand to preserve this storming performance made on July 20th 1980 by soon-to-become-legendary Blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.

By the summer of 1982 Stevie Ray Vaughn was already a veteran of the Southern blues circuit. Desperately searching for his big break he was asked to play "Blues Night" at the annual Montreaux Jazz Festival in Montreaux Switzerland. Playing like his life depended on it Stevie put on a fiery performance - full of future SRV classics like "Pride and Joy" and "Love Struck Baby." The audience could have cared less. Every song Stevie played was greeted by an increasing wave of boos and hisses and he left the stage bewildered and heart-broken…

Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of the leading blues and rock guitarists of his generation came from obscurity to enjoy a meteoric success in the early 1980s. He was a technical virtuoso who played with lightning speed and was a master of the explosive sound effects that had been pioneered by Jimi Hendrix. Essentially a blues traditionalist, he played solos in a style that was characterized by one critic as “a smooth, long-lined summation of Texas blues, ornately filigreed phrase after phrase”.
