Johnny Kemp got a lot of mileage out of a song written for him by Kashif, "Just Another Lover." The single was a huge hit in the mid-'80s and gave Kemp's debut album for Columbia a great start. Kemp, a session vocalist and composer who had worked with Millie Jackson, Glenn Jones, and Change while penning songs for the B.B. & Q. Band, put plenty of effort and energy into these tracks, but too often expended his resources on routine material. But it was well-produced, and he did well enough with the single to get a second album for the label.

Teamed with Rick Kemp, Prior turns in her best non-Steeleye Span folk-rock performance, with heavy amplification, crisp electric guitars, and accordion for support. Her airy vocals and the heavy electric sound make this a superb adjunct to the best rock sides by Steeleye (Commoner's Crown, etc.), although this stuff has more of a contemporary feel, relating to Prior's Steeleye Span work roughly the way Dylan's best '70s and '80s stuff relates to his '60s folk and folk-rock sides, with a definite rock beat and pop music feel. There's also a strong social consciousness at work, with topical songs dealing with unemployment and privation amid love songs and a very playful cover of "Who's Sorry Now". (Bruce Eder, AMG)

Johann Strauss, Jr. is the first truly well-known composer in those classical genres particular to his hometown, the Viennese waltz and Viennese operetta. The Blue Danube Waltz is not only the most popular of his works in the former category, but is among the most widely played and arranged pieces of its time, known to the most casual listener today from many radio, film and television uses of it.

The discography of Strauss’s last opera is not exactly crowded, but the two existing accounts provide formidable competition for any newcomer. First there was Sawallisch, conducting the Philharmonia for EMI in 1957 (unfortunately in mono) and a cast led by Schwarzkopf, Ludwig and Fischer-Dieskau. Then, in 1971, came that other supreme Straussian, Karl Böhm, with Janowitz, Troyanos and (again) Fischer-Dieskau, recorded in Munich for DG. The new Decca set brings together many of today’s leading exponents of Strauss’s roles, dominated, for me, by the unsurpassed Clairon of Brigitte Fassbaender, now alas, never to be heard on stage again following her retirement. Heilmann and Bär make an ardent pair of rival suitors, Hagegård an admirable Count and Halem a sonorous, characterful La Roche. (There is a delightful link with the past history of the opera in the person of Hans Hotter: he sang Olivier in the 1942 premiere, La Roche in the 1957 Sawallisch set, and here, at 84 when recorded in December 1993, a one-line cameo as a servant.) For many, though, the set’s desirability will rest on Te Kanawa’s Countess.

One of the leading young soloists to emerge from Scandinavia in recent years, noted particularly for her superb musical expression, as well as her well-developed virtuosity and musicality. Young Norwegian violinist, Vilde Frang brings together a diverse, yet complimentary selection of sonatas for her second EMI Classics release. The youthful, spirited Grieg: Violin Sonata No.1 in F Major, Op. 8 and Richard Strauss: Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18 are paired with Bartók’s technically challenging, musically complex Sonata for Solo Violin, BB 124, Sz. 117. Frang frequently performs the later, which Bartók composed as an homage to Bach, with the Strauss in concert. Vilde is joined by pianist Michail Lifits for this recording.

This project was carried out in London in July 1988 at the Artaud Theater of the Institute of French Culture. The recordings were made by Giulio Cesare Ricci assisted by Bé Yamamura, whom I would also like to thank on behalf of Carlos for his commitment at all times, technically, humanly and for the valuable advice without which we would not have reached this result. All sessions were recorded live with 4 Neumann tube microphones, 2 main M-49 and 2 ambience M-47.

“A Midsummer Night's Dream” was born in Rome; it was autumn of the year 1978. After ten years of perfecting and revising the score throughout the various voyages of this show to more than ten countries, covering all continents, I conceived the definitive album of "Dream" with Luca Mainardi during the autumn of 1987 in Barcelona and then it was put together under the general production of Giulio Cesare Ricci in January 1988, in London. It was then a process of recapturing the best moments, ideas and remnants of recordings and voice-over effects from the past, mixed with other totally new for the first and last time. (Carlos Miranda)
