Suzanne Vega was among the first major figures in the bumper crop of female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence during the late '80s and '90s. Her hushed, restrained folk-pop and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark sound of Lilith Fair, a tour on which she was a regular. Moreover, her left-field hit singles "Luka" and "Tom's Diner" helped convince record companies that folk-styled singer/songwriters were not a thing of the past, paving the way for breakthroughs by Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Shawn Colvin, Edie Brickell, the Indigo Girls, and a host of others.

This retrospective features all 16 of Vega's videos, including "Tom's Diner," "In Liverpool" and "99.9Fº." Extras include an alternate video of "Caramel," promotional videos for three of Vega's albums, a discography and a rarities archive.

States of Being has Suzanne revisiting her most haunting songs. Suzanne used to call these the "Mental Health" songs. They express a state of mind, but also more than that; Suzanne says, "they are descriptions of a place deep inside. Anyone can feel like the narrator in Penitent, or Cracking, depending on your mood". Vol. 3 also includes a brand new song, a collaboration with Duncan Sheik from Suzanne's upcoming play, "Carson McCullers Talks About Love".
