A harmonically advanced trumpeter/cornetist with a distinctive sound, as well as a talented arranger/composer, Thad Jones (the younger brother of Hank and older brother of Elvin) had a very productive career. Self-taught on trumpet, he started playing professionally with Hank Jones and Sonny Stitt when he was 16. After serving in the military (1943-1946), Jones worked in territory bands in the Midwest. During 1950-1953 he performed regularly with Billy Mitchell's quintet in Detroit and he made a few recordings with Charles Mingus (1954-1955).

"Producer-performer Al Kooper had been visiting Atlanta since he played the first Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969. The southern rock scene was exploding, and Kooper had noticed the abundance of talent in and about Atlanta. With the backing of MCA Records, he launched the Sounds Of The South label with the initial deal calling for four new artists - three of which turned out to be Los Angeles funk band Elijah, Kooper's own reformed Blues Project, and the Atlanta bar band Mose Jones."

Even at its most passionate, Olivier Messiaen's music can sound constructed and, to that degree, arbitrary. Even at its most dispassionate, in following the outlines of birdsongs, Messiaen's music can be luscious and exciting. Messiaen's 1936 song cycle "Poèmes pour mi" is regarded as a key early work in the output of the eminent French composer, as it touches upon most of the hallmarks of his mature style. ''Poemes'' is a rich score—hedonistic, opulent, at times savage—and it is richly played in this recording. Both the weirdness of some of the instrumental effects and the expressive excess give the feeling of a Surrealist landscape, through which the voice is traveling. Of the two solo pianists heard here, Pierre-Laurent Aimard in ''Reveil'' gives a performance of great virtuosity and detailed musical character, whereas Joela Jones in ''Sept Haikai'' is more vehement and more subjective.
