Elvin Jones will always be best-known for his association with the classic John Coltrane Quartet (1960-1965) but he also had a notable career as a bandleader and continued to be a major influence in music. One of the all-time great drummers (bridging the gap between advanced hard bop and the avant-garde), Jones is the younger brother of a remarkable musical family that also includes Hank and Thad Jones. After spending time in the Army (1946-1949), he was a part of the very fertile Detroit jazz scene of the early '50s. He moved to New York in 1955, worked with Teddy Charles and the Bud Powell Trio, and recorded with Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins (the latter at his famous Village Vanguard session).

Beside some wonderful own new compositions the curators introduce us to artists like Troels Hammer, Marc-George (Ex-BLISS), Antonymes or I Will, I Swear. Blank & Jones also managed to include a super rare mix of the Visage classic Fade To Grey which is truly astonishing and was crafted by original member Rusty Egan. Another exclusive premiere on CD is the Drumless Version of Lady by The Chromatics, who are well known for their amazing Soundtrack contribution of Drive. This album should be enjoyed as a complete work in one go, like a classical composition. Preferred with headphones in the highest sound quality.

A beautiful and deeply felt tribute to the legendary French chanson , captures at the nadir of his fame and the zenith of his talent, eschewing glitz and glamour to create the most mature and focused album of his career. 's maudlin, theatrical approach fits like a glove, and with the invaluable assistance of arranger , he fully inhabits the songs' world-weary romanticism.

This is one of the rare instances where the Back 2 Back Hits concept fulfills its potential. Not only did EMF and Jesus Jones explore a watered-down Madchester and dance-pop hybrid, but they both only had one true hit single, followed by a couple of near-hits that made a slight impression on the charts and in the pre-Nirvana alt-rock consciousness.

My favourite in the 80's and still a favourite in 2006. 502s or 504s, whatever, I just got to share this with you all. Music that sounds like it was produced just last week, simply difficult to believe that this was recorded back in 1979!

No doubt to the consternation of Warner Bros. Records, Rickie Lee Jones took more than three years to follow up her second (and second Top Five, gold-selling) album, Pirates (1981) with The Magazine. (In the interim, the label issued the mini-album of live tracks and outtakes Girl at Her Volcano [1983].) But from the evidence of the finished product, she might have been better advised to take a little longer. Her self-titled first album was a delightful collection of folk-jazz-pop, sparked by the hit single "Chuck E.'s in Love," but it also pointed toward the moodier and more ambitious Pirates. On The Magazine, Jones seems to be rewriting both albums at once…

Rickie Lee Jones released her auspicious self-titled debut album in 1979 and its equally impressive follow-up, Pirates, in 1981. By the spring of 1983, she apparently was not close to having a third full-length collection of all original songs ready, so Girl at Her Volcano appeared instead…
