If it ever seems that the art of the jazz piano trio has gone as far as anyone can reasonably take it –this given the legacy of great artists like Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Cecil Taylor, Ahmad Jamal and Keith Jarrett –the new recording by Italian master Enrico Pieranunzi is a triumphant assertion of the durability and creative vitality of the form. Working with two of the most musical players in the business, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, Pieranunzi largely avoids the Broadway songbook in favour of original compositions coloured by his deep love and understanding of jazz but also his knowledge of classical and Baroque form, folk and other popular music.
THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE is a monographic box-set collection aimed at recounting the most beautiful chapters that revolutionised the history of jazz.
This new series was launched in March 2010 with the simultaneous release of four box-sets, including albums by some of the artists who participated in the success of the outstanding labels. A philological work, beginning with the original recordings on multi-track master tapes, patiently integrally remastered paying strict attention to the sound quality.
French guitarist Bireli Lagrene's recent work has helped to reinvigorate the classic gypsy swing style while simultaneously adding excitement and diversity to the world's jazz market. On Move, Lagrene and his Gipsy Project really spice up his Django Reinhardt-influenced chops and cleverly arrange some of the more memorable standards and jazz styles launched on America's shores including bebop and cool. There are so many exceptional works in the Great American Songbook that it would be almost irresponsible not to include a few in one's repertoire. "Cherokee," and "This Can't Be Love," make the cut this time as two carefully placed covers that add familiarity to Lagrene's set…
If the Parisian aesthetic is about anything, it is about joy, elegantly packaged. This disc of swing tunes embodies that, being unfailingly exuberant but never uncontrolled. This is hot and sexy gypsy jazz pulled together by the extraordinary musicianship of Angelo Debarre and Ludovic Beier. The clear twang of the guitar scales the melodies up and down like a monkey, and the accordion thrums its way around the story and back again. The solos in "Le danseur de Charleston" pull you deep inside, waiting to see what on earth they might pull out next. But for those moments of strolling down the boulevards, there is also the relaxed sway of "Sous le Soleil de Paris," where the quick pattering of the guitar bounces like raindrops off the pavement…
