Helge Schneider ist nämlich seit jeher ein begnadeter und freigeistiger Jazz-Virtuose und hat seine musikalischen Wurzeln in eben diesem Genre.

All four compositions of Ørenslyd are developed from an exploration of acoustic and vocal sound formation and the active participation of our listening ability in this formation. The four pieces represent different manifestations of the tonal expression of the human voice and the acoustic richness of the double bass. Ørenslyd (from “øre”, ear, and “lyd”, sound) means “the opportunity to hear something being said or to be heard yourself”.

The genre of string quartet emerged in the middle of the eighteenth century as music for leisure, but the works of Haydn and Mozart turned it into a phenomenon of high art. Beethoven continued the tradition by creating sixteen string quartets between 1799 and 1826. Almost all of them were devised for the professional string quartet formed in the 1790s in Vienna and led by Ignaz Schuppanzigh. The ensemble was in the service of Prince Karl Lichnowsky and Count Andrei Razumovsky who were patrons of art, and began to perform chamber music in public concerts in the 1820s.

Marin Marais published his Quatrième Livre de Pièces de Viole two years after the death of Louis XIV, establishing himself as the undisputed master of the genre and providing pieces not only for musicians who had achieved some skill on the viol but also for the most virtuoso players. Here Marais reshaped the classical forms, altering the traditional sequence for the suites and making an increasing use of character pieces.

Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo is naturally an iconic work for Leonardo García Alarcón. The Argentinian conductor has performed and matured his interpretation of Monteverdi’s masterpiece throughout his life. Together with his group of soloists, the Namur Chamber Choir and the Cappella Mediterranea ensemble, he now presents his vision of L’Orfeo: Monteverdi’s opera is as much the apotheosis of the Renaissance as a testimony to the nascent Baroque style.
