Makar Grigori Ekmalian, a student of Rimsky-Korsakov, played a significant role in the development of Armenian music in the 19th and 20th centuries, expanding its genre boundaries and contributing to the formation of a new national musical language. The folk-song arrangements represent Ekmalian’s skill in blending Armenian lyrical expressiveness with European stylistic colours. His magnum opus, the Patarag (Divine Liturgy) was canonised in 1895, and is still in use by the Armenian Church today. This album of world première recordings by the acclaimed Armenian pianist Mikael Ayrapetyan are performed from the composer’s unpublished manuscripts.
After the enormous success of the film and the award-winning CD playing Chopin, Nelson Freire presents this recording dedicated entirely to Robert Schumann. The very well chosen selection "reveals the nature of the composer with charm, passion and inspired ingenuity" (according to the CD booklet) and includes Carnaval op. 9, Papillons op. 2, Kinderszenen op. 15 and Arabeske op. 18. Most of Schumann's piano music was written during the years he was courting Clara, and is full of ardor and rich fantasies. Impetuous, Carnival is the musical description of a costume ball. This fantastic vein can also be found in the second piece, Butterflies, a series of short, almost volatile excerpts.

Using piano, strings, a wind ensemble, and light percussion, Brion’s score subtly and deftly mirrors the existential ambling of Greta Gerwig’s outstanding coming-of-age film.
