The Cars' disbandment wasn’t necessarily fractious but their afterlife sure was, with the band itching to reunite while their lead voice and face, Ric Ocasek, opted out. Bassist Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, but that didn’t slow the desire for a reunion. Guitarist Elliot Easton and keyboardist Greg Hawkes took matters into their own hands in 2005, joining forces with Todd Rundgren and associates for the not-bad-at-all New Cars, and that seemed to be the end of the story until 2010, when all surviving members – Ocasek, Easton, Hawkes, and drummer David Robinson – headed into the studio with producer Jacknife Lee, who also pinch-hit on bass, to cut Move Like This, an album that defies all odds by sounding exactly like a classic Cars album.

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976 by high school friends Ric Ocasek (1944-2019) and Benjamin Orr (1947-2000), the band The Cars was among the big names in the power pop revival from their self-titled debut album, released two years later. From 1978 to 1987, under the aegis of its composer and producer Ocasek, the band recorded six albums and accumulated hits, such as "Just what I Needed" (1978), "Shake It Up" (1981) and "Drive" (1984). Their new-wave-stamped pop rock music, with simple and heady melodies, and an aesthetic shaped by artists like Alberto Vargas or Andy Warhol, allowed them to remain in the American Top 10 throughout the 1980s, then giving legitimacy to the two singers and leaders of the group, Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, to pursue a career under their name. In 2011, a reformation resulted in the album Move Like this before the death of Ric Ocasek in 2019.

A collection of four 5-track EPs from Hunter and Amendola, each focusing on the music of a particular artist or act. The project opens with ingenious distillations of Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn gems such as “Rockin’ In Rhythm,” “Daydream” and “Mood Indigo.” From Cole Porter’s songbook, they interpret standards, including “Too Darn Hot,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye” and “Anything Goes.” Country music and jazz are often cast as antithetical styles, but the truth is far more complicated.

In 1978, the Cars had a Top 40 hit with the band's very first single, 'Just What I Needed.' That streak continued over the next 10 years, as the band revisited the Top 40 a dozen more times with radio hits 'Let's Go' and 'Shake It Up' along with iconic videos like 'Magic' and 'You Might Think,' which won MTV's first-ever 'Video Of The Year' award in 1984.
