The act with the first arena-sized sound in the electronica movement, the Chemical Brothers united such varying influences as Public Enemy, Cabaret Voltaire, and My Bloody Valentine to create a dance-rock-rap fusion which rivaled the best old-school DJs on their own terms – keeping a crowd of people on the floor by working through any number of groove-oriented styles featuring unmissable samples, from familiar guitar riffs to vocal tags to various sound effects. And when the duo (Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) decided to supplement their DJ careers by turning their bedrooms into recording studios, they pioneered a style of music (later termed big beat) remarkable for its lack of energy loss from the dancefloor to the radio. Chemical Brothers albums were less collections of songs and more hour-long journeys, chock-full of deep bomb-studded beats, percussive breakdowns, and effects borrowed from a host of sources. All in all, the duo proved one of the few exceptions to the rule that intelligent dance music could never be bombastic or truly satisfying to the seasoned rock fan; it's hardly surprising that they were one of the few dance acts to enjoy simultaneous success in the British/American mainstream and in critical quarters.

Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Coming out at the tail-end of 2008, when the influence of major labels is on a slow steady decline, Revolutions in Sound can be seen as a portrait of a time that's beginning to recede into the past: a time when there was such a thing as mass entertainment, when the pop audience all shared a common bond of hit records they either loved or rallied against. Perhaps the greatest things about this monumental box set is that it captures that colossus while also illustrating that for a while, majors did take risks. Of course, Warner was the riskiest of all the majors, never held back by an anti-rock & roll sourpuss like Mitch Miller, who struggled to keep CBS out of the tumult of the '60s (this with no less than Bob Dylan as the label's flagship rock artist). Instead, Warner embraced the underground, recording some of the strangest to shake out of the '60s, and that adventure fits a label that turned to rock & roll to help establish themselves as a real player at the turn of the '60s.

Beware House Music fans, the Kontor Top Of The Clubs The Ultimate House Collection brings you home with their tracklist, loads of top house music tracks from the past few years. You could also call this edition of the Kontor Top of the Clubs a musical journey through time in the House Music genre. By the mid-2000s, when the hands-up area had reached its peak and hit more and more house music on the dance floors, no one really wanted to believe that the comparatively slow sound would be the big trend, and yet it was many tracks celebrated hard. Many artists are still a huge success in this sector and have created timeless hits with their hits many years ago. The Ultimate House Collection you can almost find them all to be exact 69 mega hits of the house music sector.

A compilation boasting 101 songs and proclaiming them all as ''classics'' is always leaving itself open to ridicule, and it's human nature to be sceptical, but I have to say that this bumper five CD box from EMI in 2009 really is fantastic set. What's rare for a compilation offering so many tracks is just how very few of them are filler. In fact, I don't think that there are any, their all 'indie'' more or less, and the majority of them were big hits.

'I Love 00s' celebrates all of the classic records that defined the 'noughties' - a culturally defining period for music in the UK. At a time when dance-music royalty, The Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, and Eric Prydz were topping the charts with their now iconic classics 'Where's Your Head At', 'I See You Baby' and 'Call On Me', the music that spanned from 2000-2010 set the tone for the century with a whole host of feel-good hits. Each disc on the album covers a wide range of tracks such as Calvin Harris's 'Acceptable in the 80s', Fatman Scoop's 'Be Faithful', Modjo's 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)', Daniel Bedingfield's 'Gotta Get Thru This', Justice's 'We Are Your Friends', and many, many more.
