The Czech Language in The Digital Age

Ondřej Vrabec is one of the world’s truly great horn players. Solo horn of the Czech Phil since the age of 17, numerous works have been dedicated to him, and he has released many albums both as player and conductor.

When the Czech composer Petr Eben died in 2007, he was renowned and performed the world over as a composer for choirs and organ. Nevertheless, 15 years on, this album inaugurates the first attempt at a complete survey of his output for the organ – an output so rich and individual that it has come to define a late 20th-century sound for the instrument as characterfully as Marcel Dupré achieved some six decades earlier.

Iva Bittova is the acclaimed Czech singer/performer/composer’s beautifully self-titled solo debut for ECM. This unique work expresses the essence of Bittova’s craft and explores the deep relationship between the violin and her voice. The pieces here, modestly-titled “Fragments I-XII” resist definition. An idiosyncratic ‘folk’ music, contemporary composition, improvisation, any and all of these may apply from moment to moment. Her music is lively and revolutionary.

Dr. Laurence Sherr is recognized for his uniquely interconnected work on music related to the Holocaust, uniting his activities as a composer of remembrance music, researcher, lecturer, producer of remembrance events, and educator.

Exciting accounts of eight anthems spanning nearly two hundred years, with a welcome emphasis firmly on recent works.

Though both men were pioneers of a new musical identity in a Europe inflamed by nationalist movements, Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) and Bedřich Smetana (1824-84) allowed numerous years to elapse before turning to the string quartet. Did they feel a certain apprehension towards a genre too closely bound up with the Austro-German tradition from which they were trying to break away? No doubt other forms had proved more conducive to their folk-tinged musical language – the miniature for Grieg, the opera and the symphonic poem for Smetana.
