With a few lineup changes at the start, and a couple hiatuses since, the Feelies have been together for over 45 years now. The band upended traditional rock 'n' roll cliches and structure to arrive at their own beautiful jingle-jangle mourning, propelled by a submerged and insistent force—oh, let's just call it Jersey motorik. Their music is characterized by strict attention to volume, repetition, and the implementation of subtle changes in tempo and dynamics. Fans of the band have longed for a full-length live album for years; with their Springsteen-length sets and seemingly endless bursts of energy, the Feelies are among the greatest live bands in the world, after all. But the group was too perfectionist to ever allow such a thing to happen with their own songs. Here's a great solution, then: Some Kinda Love, a sprawling set of 18 Velvet Underground songs, recorded at Jersey City's White Eagle Hall in 2018.

Impose Magazine recently called The Feelies “… one of the most influential bands in the history of alternative and underground music” and Rolling Stone said that they are “a template of formal perfection.” They have influenced bands like REM, Yo La Tengo, Real Estate and WEEZER, Now during their 40th anniversary comes “In Between” their first album of all new material in over 6 years. While working the VU template they are famous for this album brings some interesting new sonics into the mix. The album is both quieter and decibolically furious than anything they’ve ever done.

In his notes for this passionately compiled box, producer Gary Stewart writes, "the diversity from the late-70s punk/new wave scene turned into a full-blown, variety-fueled, genre-busting orgy in the '80s…The music became, in the best sense of the words, more complex, more literate, a bit more serious, and as a result, made astrong impact on mainsteam rock culture." From funk punk to revisionist roots rock to hard-core to smart-ass clever pop-and every musical nook and cranny in-between-Left of the Dial presents many of the '80s' most important tracks. Savor the far more influential flip side of the "Where's the Beef?" decade's musical output!

At the epicenter of New York’s most significant music scene was an instantly-forgotten record label: Ork Records, the first punk label and the original “indie.” For the first time ever, the monumental output of this explosive imprint’s 1975-1979 run is all in one place. Sixteen singles that birthed punk, no-wave, power pop, and the next four decades of indie rock, including the debut releases from Television, Richard Hell, Richard Lloyd, Cheetah Chrome, Alex Chilton, the dBs, and Chris Stamey, plus future nuggets by the Revelons, Student Teachers, Prix, Marbles, Idols, Mick Farren, and Link Cromwell, and previously unreleased singles from the Feelies and Erasers. This is a limited edition of 2000 carefully replicated 7” sleeves ensconced in a custom box modeled on period-specific Ork mailing labels.

"Pavement Tree" (Sea Recordings, 14) meant, in a way, a break with Bigott's earlier preferences, betting on a somewhat darker and thicker sound. A maneuver with which Borja Laudo and company recovered their best tone after the inferior "Blue Jeans" (Recordings in the Sea, 13) published the previous year. The present delivery, however, tends towards the opposite tendency, as it shines as a continuist disc that delves with accuracy and depth in the forms of its aforementioned predecessor. In such a circumstance definitely influences the fact that the production of the album falls again on Jeremy Jay, who goes back to surpass the strict functions of the position to fully engage and dye the whole work with his recognizable seal.

One might be forgiven for mistaking the Lounge Lizards' debut album for a traditional jazz release at a glance, what with the two Thelonious Monk covers and the participation of producer Teo Macero (who had previously worked with such heavyweights as Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Ella Fitzgerald, to name just a few). No, while there's definitely great respect shown here for the jazz tradition, the members are obviously coming at it from different backgrounds – most especially guitarist Arto Lindsay, whose occasional atonal string scraping owes far more to his experience in New York City's no wave scene than to quote unquote traditional jazz.

Tim Darcy is a Canada-based songwriter, guitarist, and singer with an idiosyncratic delivery that can evoke a young David Byrne or Lou Reed. Known as leader of the high-intensity indie rock band Ought, he's also released more personal solo material. Going by Tim Beeler at the time (his birth surname), the Arizona-born musician formed Ought in Montreal in 2011 with keyboardist Matt May, bassist Ben Stidworthy, and drummer/violinist Tim Keen. Taking heavy cues from their city's thriving scene of underground politics, loft parties, and D.I.Y. culture, the band melded unlikely influences from both high-energy mid-'90s emo bands and airy, early college rock acts like the Feelies and Talking Heads. The bandmembers all lived together in a shared apartment/practice space, self-recording their first EP, New Calm, in 2012.
