Strauss wrote a total of nine tone poems — orchestral works that depict a storyline. Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks are among his earliest successes and became instant hits with audiences worldwide. These Cleveland Orchestra recordings were captured in September and October 2021 with live audiences in Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center in Cleveland. All three were featured in a series of donor appreciation concerts, while Macbeth was also included in the season's opening weekend, the Orchestra's first public indoor performances since the coronavirus shutdown in March 2020.

"Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6," performed by The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst, captures the profound and somber reflection of the post-World War II era. Composed between 1944 and 1947, this symphony contrasts the triumph of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony with a more melancholic and introspective tone. Its three movements transition from a melancholy landscape to a conflicted middle filled with ardor and solace, and finally to an upbeat yet enigmatic finale. Despite initial success, it faced political denunciation, limiting its popularity compared to its predecessor. Recorded live at Mandel Concert Hall in Cleveland in 2023, this album continues The Cleveland Orchestra’s tradition of artistic excellence and innovative programming.

Christoph von Dohnányi served as conductor of the famed Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2002 and the rapport between conductor and orchestra produced some of the finest orchestral playing in this country. This recording of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 paired with Witold Lutosl'awski's homage to Bartok, the Musique funèbre offer the reason for the magic of this combination of ensemble and conductor. The Shostakovich is rich in sonorities and in first desk playing and von Dohnányi's control over these mighty forces makes this an immensely intense recording. The sound produced by Cleveland (captured by Decca Engineers) is huge but never less than beautiful.
