Abkco's 2005 compilation The Best of ? & the Mysterians: Cameo Parkway 1966-1967 is the first official CD release of the Michigan garage rocker's classic Cameo Parkway recordings, but for hardcore garage rock collectors, it might look a little bit similar to a 1995 unofficial release called Original Recordings. The discs not only share 25 tracks but they're presented in the same sequencing. Then again, that shouldn't be a surprise since both discs contain the entirety of the quintet's two full-length LPs – the 1966 96 Tears and its 1967 follow-up Action – plus the "Do Something to Me"/"Love Me Baby (Cherry July)" single. The '95 release contains five tracks that didn't make it to this release, but this has two previously unreleased versions of "Midnight Hour" and "96 Tears," neither of which were as a good as the released versions (the alternate "96 Tears" is surprisingly limp, actually).

Originally a BASF-LHD cassette-only release, this live recording showcases the distinctive mixture of Tex-Mex bounce and garage-punk raunch that anticipated such groups as the Lyres, Joe King Carrasco & the Crowns, and Elvis Costello & the Attractions. The band propels lead vocalist ? (aka Rudy Martinez) as he swaggers, taunts, and exhorts his way through 14 energized (if somewhat repetitive) songs, including "Don't Tease Me," "Girl (You Captivate Me)" (sung as "Girl (You Masturbate Me"), "I Can't Get Enough of You Baby," and "96 Tears." ? doesn't convey quite as much menace as he does on the original 1960s recordings of songs such as "Smokes," but since those original recordings are not readily available in the U.S., this is a reasonable substitute for a career retrospective. However, the group has released another live recording, Do You Feel It Baby?, which offers more songs and is easier to find.

Amazon Review by Stuart Jefferson
If you're a blues fan chances are you're already familiar with (if you don't already own) some/many/all of these albums. But if you don't own these sets (or have only a few) this is a good way to own all 20 albums in one nice, neat box. The sound is the same as the individual albums which is very good for the various periods when these tracks were originally recorded. The jackets are fairly thick cardboard and are reproductions of the original covers. The outer box is also of good quality. There's a 34 page booklet that has a few paragraphs on each disc, and track lists, but no detailed liner notes to really put this music into some kind of perspective, but information on these artists and styles is available in various blues books/encyclopedias and on the internet.

At the dawn of 1964, the British Invasion was literally weeks away. The Beatles would land in the U.S. for the first time on Feb. 7 of that year, and The Rolling Stones would follow them across the pond a little less than six months later. But before the two bands met their American fans en masse, they met three particular ones: The Ronettes, whose "Be My Baby" had just hit the number-two spot on Billboard's Hot 100.

Stag-O-Lee “When the Fuzztones appeared in the early 80s their mission was to continue the garage revival started the previous decade with Lenny Kays's Nuggets compilation., taking their cover versions to deeper levels of subterranean obscurity. By 1993 and Songs We Taught The Fuzztones, presenting original versions of songs they'd covered, the group had long been writing their own material, drawing from wider influences including The Stooges and Bo Diddley. … Now here's the full-circle collection, where the original-inspiration artists cover the Fuzztones: the ultimate seal of approval. The impressive roll-call includes Shadows Of Knight, Vagrants, Monks, Vanilla Fudge, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Gonn, ? & The Mysterians and The Pretty Things, joined by by Plasticland and John Zacherley to resurrect the SF Sorrow spirit on Ward 81. … The Fuzztones can retire happy now their mission seems accomplished but, somehow, that seems doubtful.” - Record Collector

The soundtrack to the book about the year that shaped the rest of the century. Pop was everything in 1966. It was a way of looking at the world, all funnelled into the single: ideas, attitudes, lyrics and experimentation that in the more indulgent years to come would be stretched out into a whole album. Condensed within the 7-inch format, the possibilities of 1966 were expressed with an extraordinary electricity and intensity – whether it be the flourishing of Holland-Dozier-Holland at Motown, the breakthrough of black American dance culture, the start of psychedelia and the beginnings of rock, or just simple mod pop.

Her mountainous stature matching the sheer soulful power of her massive vocal talent, Big Maybelle was one of the premier R&B chanteuses of the 1950s. Her deep, gravelly voice was as singular as her recorded output for Okeh and Savoy, which ranged from down-in-the-alley blues to pop-slanted ballads. In 1967, she even covered ? & the Mysterians' "96 Tears" (it was her final chart appearance). Alleged drug addiction leveled the mighty belter at the premature age of 47, but Maybelle packed a lot of living into her shortened lifespan.
