For his debut album Alexander has chosen Russian ballet repertoire arranged either by the composers, or in the case of The Firebird by Busoni pupil Guido Agosti, and Mikhail Pletnev for Tchaikovksy’s Nutcracker Suite. This is a highly virtuosic programme that showcases Alexander’s extraordinary technique. His is a name to watch.

Tchaikovsky - almost alone - saw the possibilities of specially-composed music for the classical ballet, which was hugely popular in nineteenth-century Russia. His secret was to work closely with his choreographer and link music and dance routines at the outset: this proved vital to the stage action and the final success of the whole production. Swan Lake was the first, and Nutcracker the last of Tchaikovsky’s three ballet scores. Following the success of Sleeping Beauty came the request for another ballet, which eventually formed a double-bill with his opera Yolanta. Tchaikovsky agreed, unusually, that some of the Nutcracker music could be played at an orchestral concert before the ballet opened in St Petersburg. At the concert, an enthusiastic audience encored almost every number.

Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' first forays into classical music in the 1980s were celebrated as some kind of unique breakthrough, but that overlooked the fact that Marsalis was classically trained at the Juilliard School, absorbed all kinds of traditions, and has always had aspirations in the classical sphere. Credit Marsalis with broad ambitions when he turns to classical composition, as in his Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio Blood on the Fields (1997), and again here with a Violin Concerto and Fiddle Dance Suite, written for violinist Nicola Benedetti. Both works are impressive, not least in their idiomatic writing for the violin; they flatter Benedetti considerably.

Fans of the Nutcracker Suite who are looking for more of the same type of music need look no further than the complete ballet, which contains almost four times as much music as the eight-movement suite. The suite includes much of the most striking music, but the entire ballet is a lovely, lyrical piece that should appeal to fans of graceful Romantic orchestral music. Mikhail Pletnev, leading the Russian National Orchestra and the Vesna Children's Choir, delivers an elegant account of the score.

Jazz at Lincoln Center opens its 35th concert season in Rose Theater with Wynton Marsalis: The Shanghai Suite, which Wynton Marsalis composed to celebrate the opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, and premiered at that club with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on March 16, 2019, amid a two-week tour of mainland China. The Orchestra will interpret Marsalis’ “tone parallel” to the mythology, folklore, cuisine and architecture of the enormous Chinese entrepot and financial hub. Shanghai Suite joins such iconic Marsalis works as Congo Square, Vitoria Suite and Marciac Suite, that refract impressions gleaned on his travels, as Duke Ellington did on such late-period masterpieces as The Far East Suite, The Latin American Suite and The New Orleans Suite.
