With William and Mary duly crowned there was more topical material available than usual, and the Stewards commissioned the best available author and composer to celebrate in ‘a very splendid Entertainment of all sorts of Vocal and Instrumental Musick’. Thomas D’Urfey included the libretto in his Pills to Purge Melancholy, describing it as ‘An Ode on the Assembly of the Nobility and Gentry of the City and County of York, at the Anniversary Feast, March the 27th, 1690. Set to Musick by Mr. Henry Purcell. One of the finest Compositions he ever made, and cost £100 the performing’. Of old, when heroes thought it base was ostensibly a history of York from Roman times onwards, but it also contained allegories of the Glorious Revolution. Despite D’Urfey’s sometimes contrived text, Purcell responds with music of high quality.

Although a psychedelic record , this album turns out to be the first progressive rock album ever made along with the Moody Blues's Days Of Future Past and Procol Harum's debut (even if the original vinyl did not have Whiter Shade Of Pale), two years before the Crimson King's In the Court of the Crimson King. Yes , without this record most of the progressive masterpieces probably would've never come out in the form we know them. One of the main flaws is the muddy sound recording qualty but we are in 1967!

Even the most despondent soul will not be able to resist the Bluebells' charms on The Singles Collection. Containing more than an hour of uplifting, buoyant, and toe-tapping jangle pop, The Singles Collection is an irresistible career retrospective from a band that should've sold as many records as the Beatles. Unfortunately, the Bluebells were trapped in the wrong decade. The influence of '80s college-radio favorites such as Aztec Camera and the Pale Fountains is easily detected in the Bluebells' marriage of new wave and folk, but the golden harmonies of "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" and "Cath" recall '60s fixtures like the Everly Brothers and Every Mother's Son. "All I Ever Said" captures the lovestruck innocence of the early Beatles. On "Patriot's Game" and "Aim in Life," the Bluebells explore serious matters such as the futility of war and the loneliness of old age with warmth and intelligence; although they're not as hummable as most of the tracks on The Singles Collection, they inject emotional weight in the group's discography. However, there's nothing wrong with catchy, rousing pop music, and the Bluebells cook a king's feast on The Singles Collection. One listen is all it takes to be spellbound by the shimmering hooks of songs such as "Forever More" and "Happy Birthday (Turn Gold)."

King Curtis was the last of the great R&B tenor sax giants. Born Curtis Ousley in Fort Worth, Texas, he came to prominence in the mid-'50s as a session musician in New York, recording, at one time or another, for most East Coast R&B labels. A long association with Atco/Atlantic began in 1958, especially on recordings by the Coasters. He recorded singles for many small labels in the '50s his own Atco sessions (1958-1959), and Prestige/New Jazz and Prestige/Tru-Sound for jazz and R&B albums (1960-1961). Curtis also had a number one R&B single with "Soul Twist" on Enjoy (1962).
