In 1995, A&M released Every Breath You Take: The Classics to replace the original album. It features a slightly different track listing: the original version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" replaces the 1986 recording at track 5; the '86 version appears at track 13. A 'New Classic Rock Mix' of "Message in a Bottle" is included as track 14.

While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police's 1978 debut, Outlandos d'Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-'70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge.

Before they'd become one of the biggest success stories of the '80s with such chart-topping albums as Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity, the Police toured continuously and extensively. In 1980-1981, the trio performed in India and Egypt (one of the first bands to play there), plus Japan, Australia, Latin America, and the U.S.A., which is captured on the 1983 home video Around the World. The 77-minute vid is a candid glimpse of the Police on tour, featuring potent renditions of the early favs "De Do Do Do," "Don't Stand So Close to Me," "When the World Is Running Down," "Truth Hits Everybody," "Next to You," "Roxanne," and "Shadows in the Rain," among others. Featured throughout are amusing skits (such as pint-sized guitarist Andy Summers attempting to wrestle an enormous sumo wrestler in Japan), and behind-the-scenes going-ons. Besides the music, there's plenty of sightseeing and samples of exotic lands – highly recommended.

Some of it may have been simplistic ("Be My Girl-Sally," "Born in the '50s"), but Sting was already an ace songwriter, as evidenced by all-time classics like the good-girl-gone-bad tale of "Roxanne," and a pair of brokenhearted reggae-rock ditties, "Can't Stand Losing You" and "So Lonely."

Stewart Copeland has spent more than three decades at the forefront of contemporary music as rock star and acclaimed film composer, as well as in the disparate worlds of opera, ballet, and world and chamber music. Recruiting Sting and Andy Summers in 1977, Copeland is renowned as the founder of The Police, a band that became a defining force in rock music from the ‘80s through to the present day. His career includes the sale of more than 60 million records worldwide, and numerous awards, including five Grammy awards. Copeland moved beyond the rock arena in the mid-1980s when he returned to his classical roots with creative pursuits in concert and film music.
