"Greatest Hits" is a six-time platinum-selling compilation album by the new wave band The Cars. It was released in October 1985 on Elektra Records.

Rhino will issue expanded editions of The Cars‘ Shake It Up and Heartbeat City next month, with both featuring rare and unreleased bonus material.

A killer start to the 80s for the Dazz Band – with great tunes in a funky mode as well as more measured group soul numbers – and it all adds up one of their best albums ever! Tunes like the opener "Shake It", plus "Shake It Up" and "Magnetized" bring the funkier vibes – with a vamping guitar, thumping bass groove, punchy horns, and top notch vocals from the group – while tunes like the title track and "Beyond The Horizon" have a more soaring arrangement of horns and some strings,still with an impeccable core groove. It's not as smoothed out in the production booth as some of their later grooves of the 80s.

Get funked up with Ministry of Sound and sixty funk fuelled dance floor disco anthems. Get down on it and shake your groove thing to the biggest sounds from The Jacksons, James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Kool & The Gang, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Cameo, Shalamar, Cheryl Lynn, Lipps Inc, Peaches & Herb, Anita Ward. And the beat goes on!

The Cars were responsible for some of rock's most recognizable radio hits by the mid-'80s, so when the band took an extended break after their successful tour for Heartbeat City, 1985's Greatest Hits was assembled. Mixed in with the familiar selections was a brand-new track, the playful "Tonight She Comes" (which became a Top Ten hit), as well as a remix of the overlooked "Shake It Up" ballad "I'm Not the One." And while most of the expected hits are represented ("Just What I Needed," "Let's Go," "Drive," "Shake It Up," etc.), some of the selections prove questionable – why was the title track from Heartbeat City (an unsuccessful single) included instead of the 1984 Top 20 hit "Hello Again"? Other missing radio staples include "You're All I've Got Tonight," "It's All I Can Do," and the title track from Candy-O, which would have made the collection definitive (all are included on the more extensive Just What I Needed: The Cars Anthology from 1995). But for the casual fan, Greatest Hits will do the trick.
