Quantum Theory of Many-Body Systems: Techniques and Applications

Quantum Theory of Many-Body Systems: Techniques and Applications by Alexandre M. Zagoskin
English | PDF | 1998 | 238 Pages | ISBN : 1461268311 | 18.4 MB

Intended for graduate students in physics and related fields, this text is a self contained treatment of the physics of many-body systems from the point of view of condensed matter. The approach, quite traditionally, uses the mathematical formalism of quasiparticles and Green's functions. In particular, it covers all the important diagram techniques for normal and superconducting systems, including the zero- temperature perturbation theory, and the Matsubara, Keldysh, and Nambu -Gor'kov formalisms. The aim is not to be exhaustive, but to present just enough detail to enable the student to follow the current research literature or to apply the techniques to new problems. Many of the examples are drawn from mesoscopic physics, which deals with systems small enough that quantum coherence is maintained throughout their volume, and which therefore provides an ideal testing ground for many-body theories. The book begins by introducing the Green's function for one-particle systems (using Feynman path integrals), general perturbation theory, and second quantization.

Introduction to Perturbation Methods, Second Edition

Introduction to Perturbation Methods by Mark H. Holmes
English | EPUB | 2013 | 447 Pages | ISBN : 146145476X | 4.29 MB

This introductory graduate text is based on a graduate course the author has taught repeatedly over the last twenty or so years to students in applied mathematics, engineering sciences, and physics. Each chapter begins with an introductory development involving ordinary differential equations, and goes on to cover more advanced topics such as systems and partial differential equations. Moreover, it also contains material arising from current research interest, including homogenisation, slender body theory, symbolic computing, and discrete equations. Many of the excellent exercises are derived from problems of up-to-date research and are drawn from a wide range of application areas.

The Universe Before the Big Bang: Cosmology and String Theory by Maurizio Gasperini
English | PDF | 2008 | 211 Pages | ISBN : 3540744193 | 3.9 MB

Terms such as "expanding Universe", "big bang", and "initial singularity", are nowadays part of our common language. The idea that the Universe we observe today originated from an enormous explosion (big bang) is now well known and widely accepted, at all levels, in modern popular culture. But what happens to the Universe before the big bang? And would it make any sense at all to ask such a question? In fact, recent progress in theoretical physics, and in particular in String Theory, suggests answers to the above questions, providing us with mathematical tools able in principle to reconstruct the history of the Universe even for times before the big bang.
