For sci-fi lovers the world over, Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is sacred text, so it comes as no surprise that its arrival on celluloid has been met with considerably furrowed brows, especially in the wake of its author's death – Adams suffered a fatal heart attack in 2001 in the midst of writing the screenplay. However, if the film's gloriously skewed and occasionally beautiful soundtrack is any indication, the Guide is in good hands. Director Garth Jennings tapped the considerable talents of award-winning U.K. composer/arranger and Divine Comedy member Jobi Talbot to swing the baton, and his reverence for the source material is evident from the very first note. Using Stephen Fry's wry summary of marine life's misunderstood intelligence to set the stage, Talbot unleashes – along with a chorus that includes a bawdy choir, a little girl, and an opera singer – "So Long & Thanks for All the Fish," a rousing, Broadway-style farewell to the planet (and its befuddled citizens) that's equal parts Rocky Horror and Monty Python. Mischief and Creativity are the muses here, as Talbot makes the "Destruction of Earth" sound both terrifying and irreverent – it launches into the banjo-led "Journey of the Sorcerer" that sounds like an updated version of "Classical Gas" – before introducing "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in a swirl of electronic melodiousness.

Ennio Morricone was probably the most famous film composer of the 20th century. He was also one of the most prolific composers working in any medium. No exact figure is available, but he scored over 500 films over several decades, plus many dozens of classical works. While his film scores were in almost every imaginable musical style (and for almost every imaginable kind of movie), he was most identified with the "spaghetti Western" style of soundtracks, which he pioneered when providing the musical backdrop for the films of director Sergio Leone. Morricone's palette was extraordinarily diverse, drawing from classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, among other styles. Esteemed by such important figures in modern music as John Zorn (not to mention contemporary directors like Martin Scorsese), he was frequently placed among not just the finest soundtrack composers but the most important contemporary composers of any sort.

We had idols who influenced us, from Jethro Tull to Deep Purple and later Supertramp. From the beginning, we tried to play as well as our Anglo-American colleagues, remembers Thomas Brück, bassist and singer of the Cologne progressive rock band Satin Whale.Generally labelled, as usual with a German rock band in the early 1970s, as Krautrock, the four Cologne musicians already developed on their debut album Desert Places (released in 1974 on the Brain label, the trademark for rock music from Germany) a quite independent and unmistakable sound with high recognition value. Reward of the effort - already the debut album was sufficient that in the same year the listeners of the German Radio Station Südwestfunk voted Satin Whale the most popular band in Germany in the contest Rocksound 74. The musicians then continued on their successful course.Over the years Satin Whale released 5 studio albums, a soundtrack (Die Faust In Der Tasche, 1979, starring Manfred Krug and Ursula Monn), a live double album and a remix album, for which Germany`s producer legend Conny Plank was responsible. Now a complete retrospective of Satin Whale's work is released in two box sets. The first box set The Studio Albums contains the 5 studio albums from the years 1974 to 1981, the second box set (released a few months later) contains the live album, the remix album and the soundtrack. A booklet with plenty of background information by Thomas Zimmermann and photos are documenting the history of the band.

This soundtrack album to the acclaimed BBC television series Blue Planet – Seas of Life is by George Fenton. Isolated from their accompanying videos, soundtrack albums often just don't hold up. Even if you haven't seen this television program, however, that is not the case with the Blue Planet CD. Indeed, the music here works quite well as a "sit down and listen" album. It also seems that the neo-classical arrangements surely capture the mystery, majesty, beauty, playfulness, power, and even terror of the ocean world very well. You may be reaching for a towel after listening to this one.
