Sometimes we feel ridiculously small when we discover an artist and learn their story. That’s the case here. Since I received this album and did my research on this artist, I struggled to find a way to talk about it. Indeed, I came across her website, where these few words appeared at first glance… ‘Jazz Vocalist Rebecca Kilgore.

Both as composer and person, Johannes Ockeghem remains an enigmatic figure to us today. His surname refers to a small village, Okegem, in eastern Flanders, where the name appears as early as the 13th century. Yet payment documents from St. Martin’s church in Saint-Ghislain in Henegauen near Mons, some 25 kilometres from Okegem, show that our composer was born there and that a mass was endowed to his memory, celebrated up until the French revolution of 1789. We do not know when Ockeghem was born, but the fact that he wrote a mass based on the tenor of a chanson by the famous composer Gilles de Binche, ‘Binchoys’, together with an impressive Lamento in remembrance of him, may suggest that Ockeghem received his musical education in Mons (in today’s Belgium), where Binchoys held the post of organist of Ste Waudru from 1419 to 1423 and with which he remained in contact until his death.

For his debut recording, Australian pianist Calvin Abdiel presents three technically complex piano works by three Romantic composers. All works are based on the theme/variation form. For Schumann's fiendishly challenging Etudes symphoniques, Calvin adds his own interpolated sequence of the posthumous variations. The equally demanding Liszt showpiece based around three melodies from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and the recital concludes with the near 'unplayable' Paganini Variations of Brahms, which Clara Schumann referred as the 'Witch's Variations'.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco began to focus on chamber music composition during the late 1920s. From this period comes the String Quartet No. 1 in G major, which offers a countryside panorama with rustic serenades and processional themes reminiscent of a village festival. Returning to a much-changed Italy after the Second World War inevitably generated mixed feelings in the composer - the String Quartet No. 2 in F minor reflects these through dissonance and restlessness, though dancing rhythms sound notes of optimism. His final quartet, No. 3 in F major 'Casa al Dono', is an effortless fantasia, animated and in part ecclesiastical, which was inspired by memories of his homeland and the friendships he had enjoyed.

Live at Leeds is the first live album by English rock band the Who. It was recorded at the University of Leeds Refectory on 14 February 1970, and is their only live album that was released while the group were still actively recording and performing with their best-known line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. The Who were looking for a way to follow up their 1969 album Tommy, and had recorded several shows on tours supporting that album, but disliked the sound. Consequently, they booked the show at Leeds University, along with one at Hull City Hall the following day, specifically to record a live album. Six songs were taken from the Leeds show, and the cover was pressed to look like a bootleg recording. The sound was significantly different from Tommy and featured hard rock arrangements that were typical of the band's live shows. The album was released on 11 May 1970 by Decca and MCA in the United States, and by Track and Polydor in the United Kingdom. It has been reissued on several occasions and in several different formats. Since its release, Live at Leeds has been ranked by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time.

It's not billed that way but given the Who's productivity since their initial split in 1982, it's difficult not to view 2019's Who as the band's final album. It's only their second album in 37 years, and if it takes them another 13 years to complete a third – that's the length of time separating Who from 2006's Endless Wire – both Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will be well into their eighties, a seemingly unlikely age for new work by rockers. Then again, the Who have long outlived Townshend's youthful desire to die before he gets old, a fact he began to contend with during the mid-'70s, when he chronicled his middle-aged disappointment on Who by Numbers.
