Diane Schuur, who has often been on the periphery of jazz, has the potential to be an important jazz singer although she still includes a large dose of pop tunes in her repertoire. Early in her career she had the tendency to screech in her upper register, but with maturity that flaw has largely disappeared and she has become a very impressive singer. Blinded at birth due to a hospital accident, Schuur (who would later be nicknamed "Deedles") imitated singers as a child. She had her first gig at a Holiday Inn when just ten and originally sang country music. The turning point in her career occurred when she sang "Amazing Grace" at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival, greatly impressing Stan Getz. After Getz featured her singing at a televised concert from the White House in 1982, Schuur was signed to GRP and began recording regularly. Although her 1987 collaboration with the Count Basie Orchestra was a high point, Diane Schuur's recordings tend to be a mixed success from the jazz standpoint.

Genre: Alternative Folk

First released in 2004 as a private CD-R run then later re-released formally in 2006, the softly spooked-out acid folk of The Pirate's Gospel is a captivating debut from Alela Diane, whose enthusiasm and ability for a then-extremely-fresh learner on guitar is quite something. Recorded by her father, who also helps perform on many tracks along with other friends and family members, the disc showcases Alela Diane's knack for gentle, immediate melodies and her fine voice, possessed of a hint of twang that suggests a combination of Dusty Springfield and Kristin Hersh, with a rich maturity beyond her years. The high and lonesome catch on songs like "Foreign Tongue" and "Clickity Clack" is quite something, while the interplay of vocals and guitar on the latter is particularly beautiful. Like her contemporary Larkin Grimm, she brings older forms of music to life with vivid performances, sometimes striking imagery, and a love for surprising little touches, such as the line "And a choir of little children sing along" from "Pieces of String," which is, indeed, sung by two young kids. The title track may just be the standout among them all with its low, moody backing vocals and an appropriate hint of sea shanty atmosphere in the chorus, while guest banjo from Matt Gottschalk adds a further tinge of mysteriousness. It's important to note that the 2006 version of the album differs greatly from the private release — the sequencing is somewhat altered, while a number of tracks are dropped, and a separate one, "Can You Blame the Sky?," is added. Both versions of the album are excellent but the earlier CD-R release is worth seeking out if one enjoys the later edition, especially for such fine songs as "Gypsy Eyes" and "Heavy Walls." - Review by Ned Raggett

"Some Other Time," vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur's February 2008 Concord release, is a recording of songs by jazz artists whom she first discovered via her parents during her childhood and adolescent years. The album features songs by George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Rodgers and Hammerstein and more. The set also includes a surprisingly mature-sounding rendition of "September in the Rain," recorded at the Holiday Inn in Tacoma in 1964 when Schuur was only ten years old.

This album, released in 1993, is a gorgeous collection of the worlds greatest standards. "Speak Low" isn't a standard, really, it's a Broadway tune also recorded and released in '93 by Barbra Streisand. Same song, really different versions. Tom Scott did one hell of a production job on this release. Diane is bathed in strings, each ballad carefully arranged, Jeremy Lubbock appears here to meld electronics with strings, as he does, and it works well without sounding too dated. The opening track. "When I Fall In Love" gives the listener an idea of what's in store, the glorious swelling of strings suggest a big, open sound and Diane's perfect pitch, perfect music. Her readings of all the songs here, as with all her recordings, are so emotinal and involved with the lyric, she and the song are one.

Captivating Jazz vocalist/pianist and her quartet performs innovative arrangements weaving together traditional Jazz and Brazilian jazz vocals. Following her nationally acclaimed debut release "A Sleepin' Bee", this Dianes's release once again offers a variety of playful gems such as the Latin flare of "Bernie's Tune", a burning version of "I Concentrate On You", and the Brazilian classic, "Só Danço Samba".

Having displayed a knack in the past for reinterpreting both pop and jazz tunes, jazz vocalist Diane Schuur once again succeeds in bringing together an unexpected mix of compositions on Schuur Fire. Featuring the Caribbean Jazz Project, the album finds Schuur's clarion vocals melding nicely with vibist Dave Samuels' superb Latin jazz ensemble – especially trumpeter Diego Urcola, who takes some tasty solos throughout.

Diane Schuur is that rare songbird who is equally competent as a jazz singer and a pops entertainer. While some vocalists go with more lucrative popular music and some take the road of the jazz artist in the pure sense, Schuur is able to straddle the two careers. Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole had a superb grasp of the jazz idiom, but they made the decisive choice to become entertainers. By contrast, Chris Connor, Betty Carter, and Johnny Hartman all had shots at the klieglights and hit parade but took the route of the jazz scene…

This video is simply fantastic on all counts. Two time Grammy Award winner Diane Schuur joins the Count Basie Orchestra in a wonderful concert recorded at the Rainbow Room in New York in 1987. The legendary Jazz vocalist whose lovely and pristine voice ehoes that of Ella Fitzgerald sings 14 wonderful tunes from the Jazz era of the 1940's and sings each song with the expertise and finess of the seasoned professional that she is. The lady with the sultry and crystal clear voice has been blind since birth and overcame her handicap to become one of the leading voices in Jazz. This performance is excellent and is one that you will enjoy tremendously. I only wish the video was longer yet the selections that she performed were brilliant. The Count Basie Orchestra did an outstanding job in backing her up they're really a terrific orchestra. This is Diane Schuur at her finest and if you're a fan of this Jazz legend you cannot miss this incredible live performance. Just like the title of this review this performance from Ms.Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra is a captivating hour of brilliance.

‘Love Life and Strings is an amazing debut album from experienced performer Diane Shaw which recalls the golden age of Soul from the late 60’s- early 70’s featuring real musicians and a string and horn section. Some of the songs are self penned, others are new songs by vintage writers plus there are a few covers. ‘Leave a little love’ is a wonderful dramatic uptempo string laden song arranged by Bert DeCoteaux and Andy Birkenshaw, that could have been made 40+ years ago. ‘Never Been Hurt’ and ‘Today I started loving you’are great 70’s style Modern Soul dancers that really swings. ‘These tears are real’ and ‘No More Love to give’ are Philly style mid tempo ballads, ‘Good Lovin Man’ and ‘I Go To Pieces’ Northern Soul dancers and ‘Thing That you do’ a lovely stepper using ‘Mellow Mellow right on’rhythm. This ambitous and optomistic album has that feel good factor and deserves to be one of the Soul albums of the year.
