On the occasion of the 85th birthday of Arvo Pärt (September 2020) and the 75th anniversary of the Bavarian Radio Chorus (May 2021). The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, born in 1935, has succeeded in bringing sacred music back to a broader audience, and away from the confines of the church service, more than almost any other contemporary composer. The meditative character of his works, and his return to the simplest and most basic musical forms, convey moments of intense spirituality. Before his emigration from the Soviet Union, Pärt had already invented what he termed the tintinnabuli style of composition (from the Latin word for a bell). He produced an early and important example of this expressive style in 1977 with his “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten”, scored for string orchestra and bell. It is also a key feature of the choral and instrumental works presented by BR-KLASSIK on this new CD: five works for choir as well as two for instrumental ensemble, covering all of the composer’s creative epochs between 1986 and 2019.

Hugely expanded 3-CD release of action-packed John Barry score to early Marvel Superhero film! When John Barry scored 1986’s Howard The Duck, he recorded vibrant music replete with action-packed battles and heroics, hauntingly beautiful love themes and a plethora of James Bond-ish orchestral dazzle dazzle. Barry even recorded strikingly different versions of several cues to accommodate numerous editorial changes in the film during post-production. Over 100 minutes of original music in all. A monumental scoring achievement! By the time the finished film made it to theaters in 1986, nearly 20 minutes of the scoring for later scenes had been deleted in favor of additional music scored by Sylvester Levay. Enhancing the overall musical approach to Universal’s fantasy vehicle still further were several songs arranged and produced by Thomas Dolby, essential to the antics as they were performed on screen by the all-female rock group Cherry Bomb, the lead singer of which is also the film’s star, Lea Thompson, hot off of her flashy turn in Back To The Future. When MCA Records released the soundtrack on vinyl and cassette, they chose just 40 minutes of music, divided roughly in half between songs and score. Intrada now happily presents all of the music John Barry, Sylvester Levay and Thomas Dolby recorded, spread across 3 CDs, most of it being released for the first time!

HORN TRIOS from MOZART to PIAZZOLLA and beyond (Volume 1) is the first installment of a 2-volume compendium of horn trios from the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries - an amazing "anthology" of original and arranged repertoire for the trio ensemble of horn, violin and piano. This is not the kind of recording project consisting of the obligatory Brahms Trio Op. 40 in the company of two or three other much-recorded works. Presenting a 4-centuries double-disc album with just this First Volume, the artists explore a strikingly-interesting collection of diverse styles and genres, where even the sheer number of different nationalities of the composers (from 12 different countries) brings instant awe. Yes, the Brahms Horn Trio is included, as well as works by Mozart and Piazzolla (as the album's title proclaims), but we also hear trios by composers from the United States, Canada, England, France, Liechtenstein, Estonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Morocco. Presenting no less than 8 world-premiere recordings in just this Volume 1, the album brims with rarities and contrasts, showcasing many works written specifically for these artists.
